English Literature Degree

Bryan Said:

What job should i do with an English Literature degree apart from teaching?

We Answered:

The world is your lobster. Many management training schemes are open to graduates with good degrees it is just a matter of choosing what sort of career would give you the most satisfaction.
Other media related careers such as radio tv and journalism whether you would like to be in management personnel or reporting would depend on your aptitude or inclination. Good luck!

Bernice Said:

What jobs can i get with a English literature degree and a communications minor?

We Answered:

Editing, public relations, marketing, program coordinator for a nonprofit, human resources...there are a fair number of possibilities. I think the direction you choose depends a lot on why you don't want to teach. If you didn't like playing mediator for the kids, for instance, take HR off that list; if the salary bothered you, look at private sector options.

Joann Said:

Can I study a masters in English literature with a degree in History?

We Answered:

I think so, they're pretty closely related and I've known people to switch between the two (or other humanities majors). Your lit classes will help. If in doubt, ask them.

Joann Said:

is an English literature degree appropriate if I wanted to write teen novels?

We Answered:

It would give you a good place to start - a foundation in the classics and a familiarity with writing styles, genres and stories. You would get plenty of experience writing as well - so you might even be able to do a better job than she did with these books.

However, many writers do not have a background in Literature or Writing, although many do have college degrees. John Grisham and James Patterson both had careers as lawyers before becoming best-selling authors and Michael Crichton and Robin Cook were both doctors before becoming authors, and I believe Cook still practices medicine. Some of my favorite authors also have varied backgrounds - one was a professor of and held a doctorate in Byzantine History before becoming a writer while another was a nurse in the Air Force.

While a degree in Literature won't guarantee a future as an author, it is certainly a good place to start. In the mean time, start working on that next great story or character that will be a best-seller.

Good luck.

Debra Said:

I have an undergraduate degree in English Literature, can I teach secondary English without a Masters?

We Answered:

Yes, the basic requirement to teach is only a bachelor's degree. A basic requirement for NCLB/Highly Qualified Teachers, however, is a bachelor's degree in the content area in which you are teaching. I've found that teachers who have an education bachelors (English Education, for example), sacrificed content courses in order to achieve what is basically a dual major (English + education). Therefore, your English bachelors makes you stronger in literary knowledge. (Although you should take courses that address educational issues, like the teaching of writing, young adult lit, history of the English language, etc.)

You do not need a masters to teach HS, but most reputable districts expect you to be working towards one after you're hired, with time limits for completion. The bonus is the coursework will move you up the salary scale faster, and some districts reimburse, if only partially, your tuition.

If you want to stay teaching at the secondary level, I recommend getting a masters in education, where you will take critical and valuable courses in pedagogy.

If, however, you think you'll eventually want to pursue post-secondary English jobs, teaching at the community college level or higher, then get a masters in English, because an MA in Education won't qualify you for them.

A masters in education, I have learned, qualifies you for two main teaching career paths: a terminal path teaching K-12, or preparation for a PhD or EdD in Education for an eventual post-secondary professorship in a teaching program. There are also many corporate jobs, both private and non-profit, that require a BA/MA in education too.

Deanna Said:

What job can i get that pays well with an english degree and english and literature degree?

We Answered:

well you can do practically anything. Unless you're going into medicine or scientific research, don't be limited by your degree. However, with a degree in English, your grammar should be pretty good- you can try being a copy-editor or a proofreader.
