Exercise Science Degree

Marvin Said:

What can I do with an exercise science degree?

We Answered:

Check with the head of the department first, but you have some possible options if you use your intern well. Cardiac Rehab (hospital setting), Corporate health (taking care of business people-private), Personal Trainer (health clubs or on own), PE teacher (School system), Strength Coach (might want to get CSCS certified if you go this route)or go into athletic training and be trainer (college, high school or private), teach at the college level but might need some experience first, but possibility later, or find an institute and do testing and research (university, ACSM, Cooper institute has their own testing) or go into supplements. Good luck. Hope this helps

Dorothy Said:

what can you do in a hospital with an Exercise Science degree?

We Answered:

I'm not sure you can do too much with such a generic degree. You should perhaps look into physical therapy if you want a proper career.

How can I make decent money with an Exercise Science Degree?

We Answered:

I will be honest with you, my University offers this degree, and from what I hear, it's nearly impossible to find a job. You would have to move (if you don't already live in) to a big(ger) city and really make a name for yourself. Most good personal trainers don't even have official university degrees, just some sort of certification.

What is the difference between a kinesiology degree, and an exercise science degree?

We Answered:

To make things simple and easy to understand, they're basically the same. I'm a Kinesiology major at NIU and my 'emphasis' is in Preventative and Rehabilitative Exercise Science. From the professionals I've talked to in the field and the random set of speakers that have been here as well (in the exercise field of course), they mentioned that Exercise Science used to be offered as a major of it's own then became incorporated with Kinesiology. They're going to take you in the same direction regardless, just that some schools will offer either Kinesiology as a major or just Exercise Science and not Kinesiology. The two emphasis' here for Kine are Preventative & Rehab. Exercise Science and Athletic Training.

To answer your other question, I'm not 100% sure if your school offers this but the major "Physical Therapy" would be the best bet for a physical therapist. That major would have a more effective class list to help you in the future than Kinesiology. Don't worry about it too much though, Kinesiology/Exercise Science are still a good choices for becoming a Physical Therapist.
