Graphic Design Degree
Alex Said:
What can I do with my graphic design degree? We Answered:
If you're talking serious biscuits about it, I would avoid websites that hire you for certain things like touch up because that doesn't use a degree to its full potential. If you like photography, apply for Newspaper jobs (you could be their photo taker), National Geographic (they're always looking for experienced photographers), News programs, Modeling agencies (to take photos of models), many many things like that.
Jewelery maker is a bit more difficult. If you really really have experience in it, I'd try to look into name brands (their websites probably have career openings). It's a hard market to be in and doesn't have a lot of job openings because most everything is made in China. Unless you're looking for a side job at home, I wouldn't make this one your main.
Restoring old photos is also hard to find jobs for. Try looking into places that support Veterans, or even museums and such.
Basically, try to think of places that would use these skill that you have and approach them.
Hope that helps! Good luck and sorry about your job D:.

With a degree in graphic design, can you work for a company to design fashion or accessories? We Answered:
I was in the industry. I was working doing graphic design for a children's fashion company. They actually hire graphic designers but not to design.. they make graphics (art) that go on designs. They can also have them make patterns if they learn the program. Once you have been working there a while it isn't impossible to work your way into a design position instead of an art (graphic design) position. It would be easier to get a degree in fashion design though. If you already have a graphics degree at least take a few fashion design classes on accessories specifically. The point of the design classes is to understand the process of how things are constructed. You need to know about the machines and materials you use. An examples is like when they make sweaters. You need to know how the machines knit or else you can make a design that looks nice but is impossible to make and you wouldn't know how to adjust it to be cost efficient. You would also learn fashion terms and the programs they use.
Then make a resume. one for design and one for art. If they hire you for art then it would be a lot easier to move into design with those classes behind you. If you get an art job first with your graphic design degree, you also might be able to find a company that will pay your fashion design classes.

Can I create a magazine company with a graphic design degree? We Answered:
You can do all of the design part with a degree in Graphic Design, but if you want your businesses to be successful then you might want to consider learning about Marketing and Business practices. Even if you are a good designer, it doesn't make you a good business person. There is more to running a company than making your products look pretty, you have to know how to market yourself as well. You have to know how to set up a business, financing, etc.Good luck with everything!

Where to find an affordable, primarily distance learning graphic design degree? We Answered:
If a Bachelor's in marketing isn't doing enough for you, I think another degree in design will do even less for your money. There is a glut of graphic designers out there looking for work right now. The job market sucks for advertising and marketing in general right now.If you want to be employed, a degree in project management is much more versatile and you can still use it within the marketing/advertising field. If that don't pan out a project manager is employable in most fields and a good step towards management.
If you really have a passion for design, you can probably teach yourself it, by reading lots of books and online blogs, as well as practicing by doing self assigned projects. There are alot of self taught famous designers. It's really all about having a great portfolio.

Is a graphic design degree really necessary? We Answered:
As someone who has worked in the field and as someone who used to do hiring in the field, I would say a degree is a great asset. There are lots of very talented professional graphic designers that haven't gone to school like David Carson for example. But I personally think that a designer with a degree is a little more well versed in the field and the history of graphic design than those that just try to go at it without the education.
They have 4+ years of study and can pull from that experience and reference when they enter the workforce, and that is important especially that first year. I think there is a big misconception that graphic design is just learning some software and knowing a little about fonts. When in reality it can be really complex. There are facets about typography I never would have discovered if it weren't for my graphic design education, and I know that I would not have gained the same kind of knowledge just by diving into the field.
I would say if you have the time and the $ investing in a design degree is a good idea. Good Luck!

Can a person be a graphic designer without a graphic design degree? We Answered:
Doesn't really matter that you have a BA. In fact, most college graphic design programs fall generally under a BFA or BA, not as their own category. The only thing I would suggest is to annotate your resume to say "Bachelor of Arts - Graphic Design Concentration", just in case your application goes through some rookie Human Resources twit who may not be familiar with Art degrees.Phyllis Said:
Anybody with a graphic design degree get any other jobs besides graphic design? We Answered:
In art stuff they actually DON'T want to know about any degree you have. You are as good as your last work.Creative people can do anything but (as you noticed) most other jobs do need a degree of some kind. Even flipping burgers you need to have visited some university.
If you want a chance on making it in business you better get a biz degree or at least a good education on that subject. Without it you will never be able to get around the money issues and you'll be paying big bucks to someone that can.
