Can you get an administration job at a hospital, nursing home, etc. with a Healthcare Management degree?

We Answered:

There are entry-level positions available with a bachelor's degree in Healthcare Management at hospitals, nursing homes, etc. They prefer you have an advanced degree, but there are still positions available. You have to have a bachelor's degree AND a certificate from your state to be a nursing home administrator. And most of the management/administrative positions in the healthcare industry require that you have a degree in a specialty medical area. I was actually majoring in Healthcare Management until I had a serious talk with an experienced friend of mine. She told me that she had several friends who were in Management/Administrative positions in the Healthcare industry and they are kind of "locked" into their current positions now with no where to go. She said it's a very hard advancement field b/c once people make it into a top administrative position, they stay there for years to come and people below them have to stay there where they are b/c the top positions are already filled. So I'm now majoring in Management, so I have a HUGE career angle and I won't get stuck in a low position.

Is it hard to get a job with a healthcare information management degree?

We Answered:

Health Information has become over saturated with new grads with no experience. Most employers are looking to hire people who have at least 2 years experience.

But if you are truly interested in HIM, don't let this stop you. Your best bet is to try to get a job elsewhere in the field, gain your experience and then leverage for the job you want. I would suggest you looking for a low/ entry level job in medical records or billing in a hospital. Always volunteer or offer to help out other depts and learn all you can while helping. I did that when I first started out and it was invaluable.

There was a huge surge of new grads the past couple of years, but I think people are getting frustrated with the lack of jobs for new grads and have left HIM for other fields. I think that will be advantageous to people like you who truly have an interest in it, and won't be graduating for a couple more years. by the time (i hope) things will have settled down a bit.
