Hospitality Management Degree
Freddie Said:
I have a hospitality management degree but want to get into accounting...?We Answered:
If you posess a degree - or any other qualification - then you'll already be in front of of the crowd when it comes to hunting for jobs. My mate has a degree and he wasn't sure what direction to go with it, but he stumbled upon some great tips on the website in the resource box below which guided him to settle that he wanted to be a lab assistant. There is lots of guidance on the website regarding other jobs.Nora Said:
anyone get a degree in hospitality management or manage a restaurant? We Answered:
You will get a job. There are tons of restaurants. The work is not difficult. You will get a routine going.
Salary $28,000 to $60,000. You will probably earn $35,000.
Most enjoyable part: fun people, everyone is happy to be dining out or staying at a hotel. Nice co-workers.
Least: you will work some night until 11pm then be back at 6am for a beer delivery or opening the doors for breakfast.
It is hard to make everyone happy with the work schedule. Everyone has a day they must be off and there is no way you can make them all happy.

What salary/benefits can one expect with a Hospitality Management degree? We Answered:
I worked for ten years in the hotel industry (and my wife still does), and you can expect to have no life! You will enter as an assistant manager, and be expected to work every lousy shift imaginable.Restaurant companies pay better than hotels ($60,000 v. $40,000) and generally speaking the benefits are better as well (though still not that great). However, rooms division operations of a hotel (which was my area of expertise) is fun and intense.
Good luck!

Frustrated college student here... is a degree in "hospitality management" of much use for a chef?We Answered:
This would be a help. Do you remember that reality TV show "Rocko's" or something? It was about a top chef opening a restaurant. That's what you could do. You could open a successful restaurant, and hire yourself as a chef. My Uncle went to culinary school and did just the opposite. But it works either way. You can open up your own shop.Frank Said:
I recently graduated with a Hospitality Management degree and would like to start my career in HR. Any ideas? We Answered:
There is some cross over, but I am somewhat surprised that you want ot go form graduating with - I assume a 4 year degree to a job that in most companies is an Associates degree at most. There might be a pathway to a second degree in HR.In the meantime look for what crossover skills you have gained in HR related areas and make a skills based resume rather than a chronological one.
Best of luck

Can i use a HOSPITALITY AND EVENTS MANAGEMENT degree to manage my own restaurant? We Answered:
yes, you can probably use that for your goals. Sure, that degree is focused on hotels and airlines, but the way they are managed is similar to the way a restaurant is managed. You should ask the school if they offer a concentration on restaurant management for that degree. My school offers it, but I am in Northern California. But its hard to be the manager and be the chef at the same time because there are too many things to do at once and its impossible to be in two places at once.

Discuss this matter with some of your professors. They should still be willing to talk with you.
