Inexpensive Online Degrees

Brian Said:

Are these schools looked highly upon for online master's degrees?

We Answered:

When you say that all of the schools are "accredited," you need to be careful. There are several different types of accreditation. This matters because the value of the degree will depend, in some circles, on which agency the school is accredited by. Your question also depends on what the subject of the master's degree will be, and what you plan to do with it. For example, if you are getting a master's in literature online, but you plan to go into the family business (managing a shoe factory) then probably nobody will care, and the degree will be just as valuable as one awarded for sitting in class. But if you get the master's in literature online and you plan to teach literature at a major university, then your degree will be compared with those of others who sat in regular classes, your expertise will not be as strong, and you will have some difficulty getting a job. There is nothing wrong with taking a class or two online for the sake of convenience, but planning to get an entire degree that way is definitely risky.

What is the quickest and most inexpensive way to earn a useful degree online?

We Answered:

Any useful online degree will not be quick or inexpensive. I used to work for AIU online as an admissions advisor and they trained us to tell students anything bad about themselves to get them to enroll and they charged twice as much! We would lose our jobs if we didn't get enough enrollments. Basically, don't listen to anything you hear about how fast online degree's are. You will use your degree for the rest of your life so take your time and get a degree that you can be very proud of. All schools offer distance education these days, look into it. It will take just as long as if you went to campus but you will save money on transportation and time during the day as well. And what's an extra year or two of studying compared to the benefits of a quality education for years to come? Why be in such a hurry?

Tim Said:

Will an online certificate in finance or business make me more competitive for jobs I have a BA?

We Answered:

If you mean a masters then yes indeed. Its doesn't matter how people are accomplishing their masters these days. All that matters is that the school is accredited. I encourage many folks to go for higher degrees since its more competitive these days. Landing a job is more about fitting into a particular corporate office these days, but credentials help pull for you, too. Networking is powerful and if you can get into an association or a group that will benefit you landing the work you want, its a good thing to join. When I was in college, sororieties and fraternities were a good networking source, but older students usually benefit more from associations and other groups.
