Journalism Degree Online

Jacqueline Said:

how do I know if my online school has the proper accreditation?

We Answered:

Go to the U.S. Department of Education's College Search page (off-site link).

Enter in the name of the online school you would like to research. You do not need to enter information in any other field. Hit "search."

You will be shown a school or several schools that match your search criteria. Click on the school you are looking for.

The selected school's accreditation information will appear. Make sure this page is about the correct school by comparing the website, phone number, and address information you see at the top right with the information you already have.

You can view the college's institutional accreditation (for the whole school) or specialized accreditation (for departments within the school) on this page. Click on any accrediting agency for more information.

Note: You may also use the Council for Higher Education Accreditation's website to search for both CHEA and USDE recognized accreditors (off-site link) or to view a chart comparing CHEA and USDE recognition (off-site PDF chart).

Lewis Said:

can you get a journalism degree off of only the internet through online courses? How long would it take?

We Answered:

In the US, yes, and it will take the same amount of time. College degrees all require the equivalent of four years of full time study. The question should be, is it the same experience. The answer is no - being in classes and on campus provides a far richer educational experience. However, if you are place bound for family, work, health, then is is a good option.

Laurie Said:

I have my AA degree and am thinking about going to an online college to get my Bachelor degree in Journalism,?

We Answered:

It is a very good idea! online classes are a little different though. You have to learn to apply some self discipline and dedicate a place and time each day for classes. The MOST IMPORTANT thing for you to do is to verify that the school that you choose and the degree program that you pursue are ACCREDITED! There are many online schools out there who offer degrees that are worthless, yet they cost a LOT of money. Pick a legitimate university that has a campus that you can visit and is accredited by the state that it is in. A good indication is if their website ends with .edu. If it is a .com site, it is most likely not accredited. Eastern New Mexico University (enmu.edu) has many good accredited degree programs at a reasonable tuition.
