Lpn Degree Online

Eddie Said:

Is there anyone here that got their LPN to RN degree through a completely online school?

We Answered:

There are some RNs who have completed their program through Excelsior, and even passed the NCLEX_RN and been licensed in certain states.

However, the ability to move is limited for Excelsior graduates. Many states will not accept the program as it does not meet the minimum educational preparation criteria as set forth by the Board of Nursing. If you wanted to move to one of those states, you would have to return to school and attend the program in a traditional program which is accredited and recognized by the Board of Nursing.

This is a frequent question on this forum, and many Excelsior nurses have found that they are unable to move once they have completed their programs. Also, when hiring RNs, unless there is a shortage, graduates from an online program, with no clinical experience, would be less likely to be hired for the position of choice.

EDIT: as a note, Excelsior now requires that all students for the RN program have either been licensed as an LPN/LVN or have work in some other select occupations, all of which would provide the clinical experience that would be normal in the RN program. One of the occupations they list, is physician, so if you have been a physician, the Excelsior College will be more than happy to educate as an Associate Degree Nurse.

James Said:

If you're a CNA can your earn an LPN online?

We Answered:

No I don't believe you can. There are far too many things to learn in a clinical setting then what you can get online. Plus the preparation to take your state boards is extreme. An LPN can earn an Associates Degree online.

Sally Said:

Can you get a nursing degree strictly online? (LPN or RN) And where?

We Answered:

I really hope not! I don't think I'd want a nurse working on me, giving me shots or taking my blood, who hasn't had some real life experience and real live bodies on which they have gained said experience!!!

Would you want your doctor/surgeon to get certified online?

Edwin Said:

What online college do you recommend for me to get my LPN degree?

We Answered:

I would regard online universities as the absolute last resort for someone seeking higher education.

The quality of education these programs offer is minimal - there is simply no substitute for the kind of dynamic interactions and discussions that commonly occur in face-to-face college courses. Also, the quality of educator is significantly less at online universities - the best faculty choose to teach at real colleges and universities. Both the pay and work environments are far superior to online universities. So, for great classes from great instructors, go to a real college or university.

Also, because of the minimal training they offer, employers and graduate institutions place little value in degrees earned from online programs. Many of these programs lack even basic accreditation for the degree programs they offer.

Bottom line - you will receive little if any personal or professional benefit from online universities relative to what you could have received from a real college or university.
