Masters Degree In Psychology

Micheal Said:

Can I be both a paralegal and still transfer to university to get a masters degree in psychology?

We Answered:

Absolutely you can do both. It's a good thing that you already know what you want at an early stage. Make sure you meet with a counselor to develop a student educational plan (SEP) to meet your goals. Be aware that not all your paralegal classes will be transferable, but most of the general ed requirements should be. Plan ahead and select the University/College you want to transfer to so you can adjust your SEP and take as many classes that may apply for both requirements.

How can you get a masters degree in Psychology with a bachelors of Art in Graphic Design?

We Answered:

You'll have to have the foundational knowledge in order to be accepted into a graduate program. This may mean getting a second degree (hopefully you will be able to transfer credits) or it may mean just taking additional coursework. If you have a particular master's program in mind, check out their requirements in terms of course-work and go from there. Good luck!

What can I do with a masters degree in psychology?

We Answered:

With a master's degree in Psychology or probably better yet, Community or Applied Psychology, you could eventually take your board exams and become a licensed counselor. You could even specialize in marriage and family therapy, chemical dependency counseling, rehabilitative counseling, school and vocational counseling, or just the general area. Usually, these programs will not be listed on the graduate bulletin under the psychology heading; they usually fall under Human Services, Community Counseling, or Applied Psychology headings, but all are masters degree programs and have a nice starting/entry level salary. If you would like to become a clinical psychologist or researcher, that will require a Ph.D or Psy. D, there is just no getting around that with those types of careers. If you want to do therapy and counsel clients, than the other routes I mentioned previously will get you there and will allow you to finish at a faster rate.

Can I practice psychology with a Masters degree in psychology?

We Answered:

Honestly, being a fellow psychology major. I would definitely say that a Master's would only be good if you were going for a career in I/O Psychology. A PhD is really going to be needed to be a credible counselor and actually make a decent income. Also, if you decide to move into another state, you could find that only having a MA can be possibly very limiting. Look at sites to see what the Job Outlook for a psychologist with a Master's would be in Montana, you might not like what you see.

In the economic times like we are experiencing, you are competing with a lot of people who will have more experience than you. You could be in trouble if your degree and education stops at that of a Master's.

Also, you can honestly just find a program that puts you on a PhD track so it'll be less time to get to your PhD, instead of breaking up getting your MA and then getting your PhD. It'll be less time and give you the desired goal.

Why stop at just an MA? Sorry if I sound pushy, but I'm all for going the full mile.
