Masters Degree Uk

Glen Said:

What awards are attached to completing a masters degree in the UK?

We Answered:

Not normally no. However, the university might have some value added factor going on - but it would be strange in an LLM. You need to actually ask the university.

However, it sounds to me that you may have confused what your tutor meant. The first semester would be a postgraduate certificate but not in Education, in Law.

A masters degree is comprised of three stages...

Postgraduate Certificate = first 60 CAT points of a masters - first semester
Posgraduate Diploma = first 120 CAT points of a masters - second semester
Masters = 180 points = dissertation

An LLM is generally considered to be a continuing professional development programme that does not offer any kind of certification, although you will normally need to be either Law Society or Bar Council accredited to do one.

Brett Said:

Can anyone who is applying/ has done a Masters Degree (UK) PLEASE help?

We Answered:

Yes I did go through something similar when I was about 19 at Uni doing nursing when my father was dying. Eventually, he did die (at 49 yrs), and I have never met such a callous lot of old hags that were my teachers, and I always vowed that I would never treat anyone like that. In those days ('70s and '80s) it wasn't just a case of not realising your ambitions, but they could throw you out and off the course, and boy did they really want to.

Anyway, enough of nostalgia - Oh happy day!

So here goes...

When your mother was ill when you were in Year 1 and 2 did you see anyone, e.g. lecturer, course leader, personal tutor anyone like that - if you did - was there any correspondance about your progress and your mother's illness. If there is - good - try and get photocopies of this information. If you have a personal tutor - are they compassionate and willing to support you - or do you know of anyone else who could support you and act as your advocate -what about the N.U.S. - it's worth going to see them - I had the R.C.N. on my side.

You then need to make an appointment with someone who has "clout" like the Dean or Head of Archeology and go and explain your circumstances. If they appear compassionate, and are able to see that if your mother had not been ill, you would be on-track for a 2:1 or a 1st class, then ask them to put pen to paper and say so, and you get a copy. You or your representative then needs to ask if you could have your case presented at the Exam Board at the end of the year/your course.

I'm guessing that none of this has happened at all, and that it will be quite hard doing the course that you are already far behind on plus chasing around asking tutors to give you references, reading the course and exam regs, getting someone to represent you and finally attending the exam board which even some tutors find stressful. What I am saying is that you have to be very sure that if your mother hadn't been ill, you would be well on the way to a 2:2 or a 1st. Or (and you can shout at the computer screen all you want) are you using your mother's illness as an excuse for your poor academic record - because if I hadn't asked the question they will at the exam board or at any of the interviews you will go to to get onto a Masters.

This is what should have happened, and what you will have to spend time on when playing "catch-up".

1) Your mother becomes ill;
2) You report this asap to your personal tutor (pt) or someone similar;
3) During your meeting you express concerns that your work may/is suffering because of the illness, e.g visiting her, worry, travel etc
4) You must get a copy of this and any other conversation you have;
5) You read student regs and get representation;
6) You go to the exam board with your representative and argue your case;
7) You may or may not get the result you think you deserve.

Sorry to have gone on a bit, but it is not just a case of finding a University that will accept your below average degree - by virtue of them doing that you could say they were a mediocre Uni and not one you would want to study at.

Lena Said:

Can I get a job in America with a UK masters degree?

We Answered:

I imagine you would, yes. The level of your qualification would just depend on the job you were going for I guess, same as anywhere else.

Just go for it! Good luck!
