What is a good online masters degree program in social work.?

We Answered:

There are a growing number of distance education programs in social work that have an "online" component. However there are none like (univeristy of phonix that you can do from anywhere). All MSW programs require supervised internships and so they limit where they operate and most of the "online" still require some "residency" I would suggest going to www.cswe.org and looking for accredited MSW programs in your area (or an area you want to move to). Then go to their website and see if they have a distance option. There are more of these "online" programs in the west - e.g. Unvi of portland, Univ. of Denver, Montana, WY and such.

Online degree programs?

I take about half my courses on line and half in-class. I am hot as impressed with the quality of the education I receive on line. I feel like you are basically teaching yourself. Last semester, my professor made us read 6 books, and only commented once every 10 days to each of our sessions. I have also had problems with professors not responding to e-mails and questions. This is not exactly what I would call "teaching." Since I pay an extra $100 for these courses, I wonder what I am paying for.

I take the on line classes due to convenience of my schedule. I am not sure how employers will view it, but if I had to hire someone with only an on line education, I would look at them very carefully.

Online Masters Degree?

We Answered:

Much depends on what major you're looking at. Stanford teaches engineering master's online and you can't beat that. Harvard has an IT master's almost entirely online. Duke has an MBA online. Columbia does education master's online. Oxford has International Human Rights Law master's online. Some of the best colleges in the world are teaching their master's degree either entirely or substantially online.

That's the key. The best respected online programs are at the best respected colleges. The least respected are at the least respected colleges. In the middle, there are tons of colleges offering master's degrees that are neither top of the line nor bottom of the barrel.

For example:
University of Massachusetts
University of Florida
Cal State - Dom. Hills and East Bay
Florida State University
SUNY
East Carolina U
Indiana State
Oregon State
U Alabama
U Texas
U Wyoming
Clemson University
Marshall University
West Virginia
Old Dominion
Pepperdine
U Illinois
U Maryland
U Michigan
U North Texas
Webster

there are 1000s of colleges teaching online these days and many offer complete master's online.

My favorite search tool for finding online programs is at Petersons.com http://www.petersons.com/distancelearnin…

You are not restricted to those "as seen on TV" online degrees. The best colleges in the world (and probably your own State U) are teaching online now.

Masters Degree Programs on line at Capella University?

We Answered:

You should be sceptical of it. What do you, yourself, want from this program? Are you hoping to use it to advance your existing career? To move into a new one?

Why are you looking at an online program?

You're right to be wary. Most employers don't smile on these programs. Of course, some don't care, but there are enough employers who'll take one look at a resume with "U Phoenix" or "Capella" or whatever one it, and chuck it right into the bin, that I advise you to be very, very careful. If you chose Capella or something like it, go in with your eyes wide open.

If an online program is your only option - perhaps due to your schedule, or because there are no MS Psych programs nearby, then at least (strongly) consider an online program that's tied to a reputable brick-and-mortar university.

There are reputable, "brick and mortar" schools that offer degrees online. Their good reputation for their on-campus programs will flow over into their online program.

Some great universities that offer online degrees include:

University of Massachusetts at Amherst
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
University of Denver
University of Maryland
Duke University
Drexel
Carnegie Mellon
Penn State
Ball State
U Nebraska - Lincoln
Babson
Worcester Polytechnic Institute
University of Illinois

And there are others. And you'll have to check which ones offer online MS Psych.

But in general, when you're looking for a distance learning degree, try to find a program at a school that has a good reputation for their "brick and mortar" campus.

Good luck.
