Network Security Degree
Terri Said:
If i want a degree in network security/programming, would it be a better choice to go to an actual university? We Answered:
Either one, but an actual university will look better on your resume. There are regular four-year colleges focused on technology, though. I go to Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, MA, but the school is a normal four-year college that focuses on technology majors. These types of schools are very attractive to employers since it shows them you knew what you wanted to do as a career by attending a technology-focused college.Melanie Said:
Network Security degree, is it really worth it?We Answered:
From your details, you mentioned that nobody is hiring for anything. Are you unable to move or relocate to find work? Getting certifications is a great idea, but if there is nobody there to hire you, the usefulness of certifications seems much less.If you cannot relocate, getting a college education in this area can get you a job, but you will probably have to relocate unless there are people hiring for those positions in your area in 4 years.
Also, if you aren't doing anything with your certifications, new ones will probably come out by the time your area gets around to hiring those positions. It really sounds like you're not in a good market for network jobs at your location.

What kind of jobs are out there for someone with a Bachelors degree in Network Security? We Answered:
Hi Randall. I work for one of the Gartner Quadrant leaders in Network Security (Firewalls, Access Control, IPS/IDP, etc.. etc..). How much industry experience do you have? Are you a member of your local security white hat club? Do you have any independent or vendor certifications (ie: Security+, CISSP, CheckPoint Certified, Cisco Certified, Juniper/Netscreen Certified, etc.. etc..). All of these will help you towards getting yourself a great job in network security, as it will help you build up your network of contacts.A few areas to consider looking into:
1> Have you considered working at a local reseller/Security VAR? Usually a VAR/Reseller will represent major manufacturers and are usually willing to sponsor you to get industry (usually specific to the manufacturer you are working with) certifications. This will also get you exposure to many different companies instead of just one.
2> If you had very strong grades (ie: near the top of your class), I would equally consider applying to the Big three accounting firms (Deloitte, Price Waterhouse, Ernst & Young) as each of them have Security Auditing practices (I used to work at Deloitte's Security group).
3> Every major corporation has a security group now, the more specific about the area you want to work in the better (are you more focused on operations, or are you on the policy, governance or identity management side of the house).
These are a few suggestions, I hope they help.
Sincerely,
Ken

Can anyone help me with LaGuardia Community College Network Administration & Security maximum Credit transfer? We Answered:

Network Security degree??We Answered:
If you want to work in Network and Computing Security you might want to get out of a major that sounds developer oriented. It would be more common to have a degree in Computer Information Systems (CIS) or other similar ones. See it it is possible to change majors. Remember that most of your first two year courses will be general and it is usually the junior year before you hit the main courses.
