Online Certificate Programs

Erica Said:

Anybody know of the requirements to get your TESOL certificate in NY? Are there online programs?

We Answered:

Hi,
I got my TEFL certificate last year in Prague. (TEFL Worldwide Prague) The requirements are pretty basic. You need to be a native speaker, and hopefully have a BA (that's more so you can teach after you complete your degree)

The bigger thing to look at is what the program you enrol in will offer, and if the certificate will be recognised after you get it.

Here is what to look for in a program:
online courses are really not recognized by most employers. For one reason, you won’t get the necessary teaching practice during the course and you won’t be able to be observed by experienced trainers in order to find out what you are doing right or wrong. For another, most online courses are less than 100 hours. TEFL courses in general are recognized internationally as long as they meet the industry standard of being at least 100 hours, having a minimum of 6 hours of teaching practice observed by an experienced trainer, and having qualified teacher trainers. The course I took was 124 hours and offers 8 to 10 hours of teaching practice observed by the trainers. The trainers have about 20 years of EFL experience and teacher training experience between them, and really knew their stuff. I felt super confident that I would get a job after I graduated.

I hope this helped!

Do you know if online courses and certificate programs real or scams?

We Answered:

I take my hat off to you and wish you the very best .... to answer your question .....
Some are some aren't - the best way is to contact whomever the course claims to be accredited by - they will confirm or deny - but will also offer advice to real and proper accredited courses ..... that way when you produce your resume/CV - you can highlight to your prospective employer that your qualification is accredited and officially recognised ..... then, if they want to be sure, they can check and confirm this themselves by contact with the accreditation body .....
I would also advise against any course that isn't properly accredited .... if your'e not sure just ask at your local college for information on accrediting bodies .....

What colleges offer online certificate programs?

We Answered:

depends what country you are in.

All the leading universities in Australia are now on-line and offer full degree study in a huge range of courses on line.

Anne Said:

where can i find a good online certificate program for culinary or welding?

We Answered:

Sorry to inform you but both of these you need to goto school for. Being a chef does not necessarily mean that you know recipes but that you are able to produce a palatable and presentable plate to the customer. As for welding the certification test is not written. It is an actual welding test where you weld two plates together and they are sent out for testing... Sorry to be the bearer of bad news....

Do I need to mention "online" in my resume about eCornell certificate program?

We Answered:

What does the certificate say when you are done? How will Cornell verify if someone calls? The last thing you want to do is tell them one way, and have the employer get verification that doesn't match. You want to avoid even the appearance of being dishonest.
