Online College Degrees

Kathleen Said:

Are online college degrees legitamate?

We Answered:

Finding an accredited online degree program can be a task these days. There are so many for profit online based colleges that don't focus on education, and how importance it is to give there students the same level taught degree as major universities. Start by looking at the distance education that your own state university has. If they do not offer the classes you want, then look at others. Most of the time, state universities will be less expensive than any for-profit online program that you might see offered on the internet.

Constance Said:

Are online college degrees looked at as much as a normal degree?

We Answered:

There are tons of online programs. I personally attended American Intercontinental Univ. and Capella University, and I have taught for various online schools over the last five years. All are accredited and solid programs. Online courses tend to vary in price, so we could say they are more expensive, but that is relative. Of course they are more expensive than a community college, but less expensive than Harvard. The price range varies.

The key is to find a program that is fully accredited. Is it worth it? YES. My career has boomed since my MBA at nearly 5 years ago. I am close to finishing my PhD through distance education, and I am at the job that I want. I know I wouldn’t be here without the education. If you are looking at work in the U.S., then you need a school that is accredited and recognized by the Dept of Ed. I can give more info on that later.

You should market yourself and not the degree or university. There are many traditional universities offering degrees that can be earned through online methods. Distance Learning Alliance has a list of these traditional online schools. Look at that if you are truly concerned with the name of the school. Good luck on your search!

Dennis Said:

Are online college degrees legitimate?

We Answered:

A lot of employers look down on universities that are famous for being either online or for profit. So if you do decide to go to uni online, do an online program via a reputable, regionally accredited, brick and mortar university like UMass Amherst, Carnegie Mellon, or U Maryland, rather than U Phoenix. And for your actual bachelor's degree (rather than just taking a few classes), I strongly advise you to go to a campus-based program at a reputable university, and not do the degree online. Employers, likewise, strongly prefer this, and you miss out on a lot of the university experience if you do it online. I generally only advise online degrees for people who CAN NOT get to a campus, and can not get a degree in ANY other way.

Many colleges will allow you to take courses with them as a high school student, with the permission of your high school. In general, these classes count toward your high school graduation, not toward a college degree - but that depends. Speak to your guidance counsellor and to the university.

In summary, if you want to take a few online classes, you should be able to do so. But I'd rather you wait and get your degree in person, so that you get the full college experience, and so that employers respect your degree.

Online college degrees...... Okay i get a bunch of u o p and other miscellaneous online degree popups its a jk

We Answered:

Some employers don't want an employee that has an online degree. Yes, they do sound good to be true. But if you want to take some classes with those online universities and just want to learn more, go for it. Well, some smaller companies probably won't mind an online degree.

Some universities have online courses you could take to get a degree, like Harvard I found out recently.

Thomas Said:

What are your pros and cons about Online Degrees vs Physical College Degrees?

We Answered:

Everything has its pros and cons so that but that depends upon person to person. As a advantage to one can be disadvantage to other. Advantages of online education is that a person can attend his/her class anytime and any where according to his/her availability. So that gives one the liberty of doing a job or any important work along gaining education. Moreover if you are intelligent enough then you can finish your courses before the estimated time.
Traditional on the contrary you need to attend your classes on specific time at a give place that is your classroom. But some old thinking people find traditional more effective than online. That is true in some field but not in every field.
So one must decide online or traditional on the basis of need, not on the basis of speculation made by others.
