Nathaniel Said:

I am looking for an online masters degree in counseling from a university with a good reputation.?

We Answered:

^That's not entirely true. We're not talking about a UPhoenix degree here.

Some employers will favor a brick and mortar degree, some wont care, some even though few will prefer a online degree over the other. Point being is you really need to get your degree from a school that is regionally accredited and prefferably associated with a brick and mortar school.

If your looking for a school counseling career path Umass Boston has a online online program for "Master of Education in School Counseling". It is the same degree as from the brick and mortar school and wont say you took the courses online on it if you are worried about that. Keep in mind this isn't a open enrollment program. The admission requirements include:

-An official transcript from each institution attended (both graduate and undergraduate).
-Undergraduate transcript with at least a 3.0 cumulative average.
-Bachelor’s degree equivalent to U.S. bachelor’s degree (a 3-year bachelor’s degree plus a two-year master’s is also accepted or students can complete additional undergraduate courses).
-A minimum of five undergraduate social science courses.
-Submission of Test Scores: Out-of-state and international applicants must submit a test score for either the Millers Analogy Test (MAT) or the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) unless the applicant already holds a graduate degree from an accredited U.S. institution. In-state applicants must submit test results for the Massachusetts Test for Educator Licensure (MTEL) - Literacy & Communications portion.
-International students must submit scores for the TOEFL or IELTS.
-Three strong letters of recommendation indicating the applicant’s ability to work well with others.
-A two-part statement of interests and intent. The first part (300 words) gives a student’s reasons for wishing to pursue graduate study; the second part (at least 1,200 words) describes a student’s interests and discusses the kind of work s/he would like do to in the intended field.
-At least one year of paid or volunteer work in a school or equivalent setting is recommended.
-etc...

Eric Said:

Does anyone know about guidance counseling degrees?

We Answered:

The degree is a Masters of Science in Education, with emphasis on educational psychology and guidance and counseling. There are numerous "real" universities with that degree. If you do the work on a full-time basis you can have the degree in hand in one year. Please note that not all universities are created equal in that area (or any other, for that matter!), so it would be useful for you to contact various school principals and ask where their counselors got their MSEd and who they would hire if they had a choice. For example, I checked in Illinois and found a distinct preference for school counselors who got their Masters at Eastern Illinois University and NOT University of Illinois, which is generally considered a finer school -- but not in degrees in education at any level. So -- check around, and avoid the on-line schools, which are viewed by many with suspicion at best.

Gerald Said:

Should I get a masters degree in counseling online???

We Answered:

No. Go to a real college/university. A state school is better than an online school in every aspect, AND it's a hell of a lot cheaper.

Nathaniel Said:

I want to finish my counseling degree.I dropped out of school 10 yrs ago.Does to look bad to finish online?

We Answered:

It won't look bad if you finish on line because it will be ignored as a credential. Totally online "schools" are a scam developed to separate good but gullible people from their money. Do you know of even one legitimate business or university that accepts online degrees as legitimate? Don't waste your time or your money.

Day care or the father keeps the kid in the evenings while you finish college - in an accredited bricks and mortar institution.

Good luck to you.

Online CACREP program in Mental Health Counseling?

We Answered:

I would have to say yes, if it is indeed accredited, it is valid, and the degree you earn is acceptable at most institutions.

I have heard good things about online degrees, however I went to a University for my Bachelor's.

Discuss It!
