The only schools that I would consider taking online classes from are either the local community college or traditional university as just about all colleges offer some online courses. Please steer clear of those online, for-profit schools (though may have 'brick and mortar' buildings and may be 'accredited') such as penn foster, ashworth, devry, university of phoenix, capella, ITT tech, strayer, argosy, sanford brown, everest, kaplan, ashwood, remington, ashford, high tech, walden and others as they are merely out to 'make a profit' (and course credits may NOT transfer to other schools). This consumer site has many posts by former students about those online, for-profit schools and please heed the students' warnings: http://www.ripoffreport.com and can search.

The U.S. dept. of education does not give accreditation to universities directly. Rather there are six regional accreditation boards that determine which schools are accredited. There are a number of exceptional schools that offer accredited online degrees. I would do a search on google for accredited online degrees. This site was the first I saw and it seems to have good information on these schools:

Argosy University offers online doctorate courses and, I believe, has the largest graduate community in the country so they must be decent.
