Henry Said:

Where can I get an on-line associates degree for healthcare?

We Answered:

Try University of Phoenix Online or DeVry. I just recently graduated from UofP with in associates in Health Administration (they also have bachelor degree programs in health), but I transferred to DeVry and I am pursuing a bachelors in Technical Management with a concentration in Health Service Management (they also have other health care programs).

The only reason I transferred is because DeVry is more well known amongst employers and their program is a little more accelerated than UofP's. Unfortunately health care degrees are limited online because anything a little more health care involved may require you to sit in an actual classroom.

Good example, I really want to be an RN and this is my long way of getting there until I can actually sit in a classroom environment. So check out those two sites and you may be able to find something that is not geared around health administration.

Misty Said:

what is healthcare administration?

We Answered:

Health admin is the non-clinical side of healthcare. There are divisions within the major, such as clinic supervisor, HR generalist, admissions and financial services, etc. You should decide soon which track you want, as that will help you in your job placement. Get any internships or volunteer opportunities at your local hospitals or clinics that you can--and make sure that graduates from that online school do indeed get jobs!

Amy Said:

Can a Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Administration help me enter a new career?

We Answered:

This could be a viable option. However, I would consider you contact your local Employment Development Department and see what they have to offer. There are a lot of programs out there to help the unemployed, especially women. It might be best to check those out before you start all over and incur a lot of debt right off the bat.

Also, there are a lot of other programs out there that are less expensive. This would include junior college, ROP and adult schools. Pick a few companies you would like to work for and ask what they are looking for and what you could do to make yourself a more viable candidate.

Right now many people are taking jobs beneath what they trained for. Even if you complete this program there is a good chance you still won't be able to find a job unless they guarantee you one.

If you want health care you may want to go become a CNA or Home Health Aide. Right now the industry is screaming for in home health aides. You could even get a live in position which would also solve your housing problem. Check with local home care agencies and see what they are looking for in terms of education.

How far can you go with a degree in Health Care Management/Administration?

We Answered:

Hi Sahara,

You may want to consider a not for-profit school. It could save you a lot of money! As far as career options, you will definitely need experience. The degree will always help, but employers almost always value experience over education. The good thing about an online program is that it can be flexible enough to allow you time to work.

There are definitely Master's programs out there in this field, so that will not be a problem. I bet there are even Phd programs out there in this field.

Here is an important question to ask: Does this school require group work? This can make your life very stressful! Especially online group work where your 3 group members are in different time zones with different schedules. I have nightmare stories from trying to deal with this!

I personally like Iowa Central Community College. www.iowacentralonline.com This program is a lot cheaper than UoP and can be transferred into a 4 year program later.

Discuss It!
