Online History Degrees

Mae Said:

Does any one know of a school that offers a History Degree online?

We Answered:

Regent University for undergrad. But for grad school you'll need to be on campus for TA positions with the ability to travel for dissertation research, which can be funded by the University. In addition if you're planning on going to graduate school you will need letters of recommendation from your professor's and sometimes that's hard to get with online classes. I did my prereq's online at a community college. I took the same professor for the history classes(3) and the same for english classes(3) so I was able to foster somewhat of a relationship with my professors and got good recommendations from them during the transfer to a 4 year university process.

Jessica Said:

I want to get a LEGITIMATE masters degree in history online or through a distance program. Any suggestions?

We Answered:

Fort Hays State University (Master's of Liberal Studies with concentration in history available. This institution is accredited by a legitimate accreditation association.)

Norwich University (Military history only, but it is also accredited by a recognized body.)

Having said that, both degrees, although accredited by recognized accreditation associations, would be considered worthless in the larger context of academia, because legitimate Master's degrees in the liberal arts require close mentoring and guided research within the context of an active intellectual community. Online programs can only provide reading lists, examinations, and discussion groups, and are only able to focus on content or data.

A real Master's degree from a "brick and mortar" institution is not merely about reading, taking tests, and discussing the reading with others. A real Master's degree focuses on theory and methodology. It requires a setting in which a student can take the first steps toward a certain level of competency in a subject area, guided by professors with expertise in that area, and engaged by peers with ongoing similar methodological and theoretical investigations.

I do wish you the best in your pursuit of further studies.

What online colleges offer degrees in Art History?

We Answered:

You do have options. Many four year brick and mortar colleges and universities offer online bachelor degrees -- and beyond!

Many of these four year brick and mortar colleges with online Bachelor degree (and beyond) programs not only consider you an actual student, where you can use campus amenities like the college library or student rec center, but they do not differentiate between a degree earned online and a degree earned on-campus.

Also, just in case you want to change things a little down the line, many of these colleges also let you take a combination of online and on-campus classes just in case your circumstances change and your schedule permits.

Online Learning and a degree in Military History?

We Answered:

As for career options, you can continue to go to school and eventually become a professor, which does of course mean some teaching, but can be a mainly research position.

Or, you could do what I did (a history major who taught for several years before leaving teaching) - I'm a public historian. I work in the preservationist field. Particularly, I work for a state agency, though there are jobs like this available at country, municipal and national levels, with programs such as local history preservation, museum preservation and the National Register program. As a matter of fact, I work closely with a colleague who received his Master's degree with a concentration in military history - He is my agency's Military History Historian.

I don't think that employers are particularly impressed by online graduate degrees. However, if (and this is a big "if") you are interested in Texas history, Sam Houston St. offers an online program that apparently is considered excellent by various state historians.

Good luck!

Caroline Said:

where can i get an online history degree?

We Answered:

With all of the discussions, reading, and writing required to earn a degree in History, why would someone take it on-line? You would miss out on so much that way. The debating that goes on is half the fun of earning a History degree. You still have to pay all the fees and do all the course work anyway, take the class and enjoy the diverse dialog.
