Online Masters Degree

Karen Said:

Is getting a Masters degree from Phoenix online worth it?

We Answered:

Personally, I would not recommend it. Despite their massive advertising campaign, the University of Phoenix online has a fairly poor reputation. Depending on your situation, I'd recommend looking into the option of part-time or evening study at a local college or university (I'm assuming you are working now and can't do full-time study...but if you can, go ahead) or some reputable distance-education programs. There are several well-respected distance education programs out there, the key is to make sure they are associated with a well established university.

Hugh Said:

Can I get a good job with an online Masters degree?

We Answered:

No - online degrees are designed to separate gullible people from their money.
Find a night and weekend Masters program or an Executive MBA program at a legitimate bricks and mortar school.

Need to find grants for adults to get an online Masters degree?

We Answered:

Unfortunately, Pell Grants do not exist once someone graduates with their first Bachelor's degree. There are scholarships out there, but they are limited in number. There is the possibility of a Graduate Assistant or Research Assistant positions, but I have not seen any of them related to someone taking courses online. I will list some free resources to locate money for college.

First, the college's financial aid office and website has a list of private scholarships offered from outside organizations and companies. Sometimes a college major's website will list scholarships, too.

Second, the public library has a book listing scholarships with some not even listed on the web.

Third, fill out the FAFSA form after January 1 for the upcoming fall semester after you apply for graduate school. It will qualify for need based financial aid from the school itself.

Finally, I recommend joining several free membership scholarship search websites. There are scholarships for a variety of things including ethnicity, clubs, hobbies, and even wearing duct tape to the high school prom. Most are updated on a regular basis. Most offer a customized search based on information entered onto a form on the website.

Good luck!
