The easiest way to get in is to work your way up. You may have to start off at the front desk to get a better understanding or in a temp position so you can learn. Once you have a better understanding you need to get certified through AAPC or AHIMA. Also, you should become a member of AAPC and go to your local chapter meetings. It is an excellent way to meet other coders in the field and find out about job openings.

In those particular fields, you don't get a "degree." You get a diploma or a certification showing that you put the time and work into learning how how to code and bill for a medical office, but your options will be pretty limited. It would be like going to a trade school where you learn one particular skill and that is what you have to market. It's legit though.

Employers accept it if you can do the work. You should go to a school that specializes in Medical careers. I graduated from Meditec.com from their medical transcription and coding program. I am in their billing program right now. Working at home doing billing can happen BUT what other schools won't tell you is that you need really expensive ($1,000) software to do that. Starting out in a medical office, billers are paid $12 to $15 an hour. If you could eventually get accounts and work at home, then it can be quite lucrative as you are paid a % of what you bring in for the doctor.
