Online Physical Therapy Degree

Stanley Said:

Are there any online physical therapy assistant degrees out there?

We Answered:

This should be a good start for you.

Ryan Said:

Where can I complete a Physical Therapy Assistant degree online?

We Answered:

There are no online PTA programs...only "aide" or "tech" programs are available online, but truth be told, the pay for a tech is not worth it. You can get a job as an aide or tech without any formal experience.

Clifton Said:

is it a good idea to take a course as a physical therapy assistant online?

We Answered:

The Penn Foster program is not a program for the physical therapy assistant...it's a course for a physical therapy AIDE. This is a job that involves assisting the therapists and assistants, clerical work and light housekeeping.

You do NOT need any certification to become an aide/technician...it's job most frequently done by college students and pays about $10-12 an hour...hardly worth any certification.

The aide/tech job is a good job if you want to someday become a PTA or PT, but the certification for the tech/aide position really doesn't offer you any further advantage.

Online Physical Therapy degree?

We Answered:

There is only one modified online program in the US. It's run at the University of St. Augustine. It requires a bachelor's degree for entrance into the program. The program consists of online learning modules with intensive weekend labs that run from Friday to Sunday evening every other weekend at either the Florida or California campus. Of course, once you reach the time to reach the need to do clinical work, this is done in regular day time hours (or whatever hours there therapist keeps). In total, there are usually a total of at least 26 weeks of clinical work intersperced throughout the course (i'm not sure on the specifics of St. Augustine).

The other considerations you need to consider are:
Do you have a bachelor's degree already? If not, you'll need to obtain one and also be sure to include the prerequisites courses...usually a year each of general bio, chem and physics with labs as well as psych and statistics.

The final consideration is: Since the U of St. A program is done in online learning modules, it takes longer to complete than traditional PT programs. It takes 4 years instead of 3. So if you don't have a BS already, it will take about 4 years for you to do that, and 4 to complete the graduate level degree. If you already have some college, but not the prerequisites, you can finish that sooner than starting from scratch.

Good luck.
