Sister Sophia is apparently unaware of the internal debate in academic Sociology during the past twenty years or so between the "Empirical Sociologists" who want a recommitment to scientific methods and the "Public Sociologists" who want a clear commitment to social change. The Public Sociologists won, and therefore Sociology is no-longer taken seriously.

If you want to work with children and families you may want to major in social work (BSW) and minor in sociology. They complement each other. If you want to counsel children and families you may want to major in family counseling/therapy.

Depending on the state where you intend to work, you may be able to work in child welfare CW) where you work directly with children and families with ANY degree.....you need to decide where you want to work and then adjust accordingly.

3. University of Colorado - Denver
4. University of Massachusetts - Boston
5. Central Michigan University

Now if you wanted to deviate to Social Science or Psychology there are many more Universities offering online programs in these majors. The prices vary between institutions, I believe in the list above Columbia College would be the best price for the quality school, it is ranked in the top 100 of America's best colleges. Northeastern University would be the best overall, though it is more expensive. The requirements for these schools is usually a High School diploma, and a GPA over 3.0, though any extra perks you may be able to present to them will most definitely help.
