Online Teaching Degrees

Terrance Said:

Do any online colleges offer teaching degrees that you will actually be certified?

We Answered:

There are no programs that are entirely online.

You must complete student teaching. WGU has a program where most is online, but you must meet in person with your advisor and do student teaching.

edit: the above is for k-12 certification. preschool or daycare certification has lesser state requirements -this would be different.

Do online degrees work in China for english teaching positions?

We Answered:

Having taught immigrants for many years, who spoke many languages, which I did not, I can categorically tell you that speaking a student's native language is absolutely not necessary or even desirable. Speaking their language only makes you into a walking human dictionary and will actually hinder THEIR learning. I also taught international teachers who came from many countries to learn how to teach EFL, some from China. The problem and argument about degrees has been fomenting for some time now. Many Asian countries are beginning to tighten the regulations and education level of foreign teachers because in the past, many charlatans went over there and basically made money fraudulently. Fraudulently in the sense that they had now idea how to teach but just by virtue of speaking English and being "western" they found employment. Also, many of them had less than savory character and morals and abused the locals. So now, it's much more difficult to find employment if you don't have a degree. A degree doesn't necessarily make you a better teacher, only that it makes them feel better about who a person is. Now having said that, it's still possible to find jobs but it takes a little more effort and you'll be paid much less. Here are a couple of websites you might want to check out. The first one is http://www.transitionsabroad.com/ which tells you all about working and living overseas. The second one is http://www.eslcafe.com/ and this is the largest and most comprehensive overseas teaching website around. They have job postings for many countries and many teacher forums where you can ask advice of others who are there right now or have been and have the experience to give you the straight goods. Good Luck

PS - Unfortunately, many Asian countries are dazzled by degrees, even if the person behind the degree is an @hole or they can't teach their way out of a paper bag.

Teaching Degrees Online??

We Answered:

As you can see by the nature and tone of the replies you've already received, your question was answered in a rather traditional frame of reference with little to no regard to providing you i) hope, ii) encouragement, and iii) some advice on how to make your online experience successful.

I'll give it a shot with my reply.

First, please know my bias (it's my disclosure statement to the traditionalists). As a student I took classes online -at the graduate level. As an instructor, I've developed and delivered classes online -at both the undergrad and graduate level. As a fairly well-educated, well-read, and I like to believe, open-minded adult, there is no doubt in my moind that online education is bona fide ....

And, I may as well get my shot in here to try and provide some salve from the rather inconsiderate shots you've already taken ... if those that claim online education is less than their "education"; that it's as random and cheap as the prize in a Cracker Jack box ; that there's only one way to get a "true" education: that somehow, online education is "less-than" education ... than I pose this: Why in the **** is public education in america so dysfunctional?

It's not the students.

For all the yahoos that completed the traditional gig of getting their degrees and then made their way into policy-making positions, what have you done for education lately?

For all the yahoos that completed the traditional gig of getting their degrees and then made their way into teaching -at any level- from Pre-K through PhD, what have you done -beside lecture- for education lately?

And for all the yahoo educators -at any level in any capacity, that trash online education at all costs ... two questions, i) what exactly do you know [not theorize or ponder] about online education, and ii) what have you done for education lately?

Yes, online education -for that matter, teaching yourself- can and will prepare you properly for the teaching field. The content knowledge of teaching is mainly theory that certainly needs to be learned and then applied -as such, you need the opportunity to be in front of a classroom, or an audience (maybe you're presently a corporate trainer and that certainly provides the opportunity). My point is, that online education cannot be blithely dismissed by anyone ... for some people it is their ONLY opportunity to further their education -and in my book that's a lot more importabt -and productive- than having to say I can't complete my education because I can't get to a classroom.

Good luck -and do it!

Does anyone know of any schools that you can get an online teaching degree?

We Answered:

It would scare the hell out of me to have my daughter taught by some one whos degree came from their computer. If you have to wait to go to school, please do. Besides, you'll have to do your student teaching and that can't be done from home.

Online schools that offer teaching degrees?

We Answered:

You can't get a teaching degree online. Would you want to be taught by a teacher who learned to teach on the internet? Teachers have to be "student teachers" first, where we teach a class under the supervision of a master teacher. We have to do that for a full year. Even if there WERE an online teaching program, no school would hire you with that kind of degree. In this economy where teaching jobs are like gold, you'd be facing some pretty tough competition. California does NOT hire people with online degrees. I teach in California. In L.A. alone, they are laying off 1600 teachers. Don't try to teach in California anytime soon.

To be a teacher, you need a bachelor's degree, a teaching credential (usually a 1-2 year program) and to pass the appropriate tests (multiple subject for elementary, single subject for secondary).

Discuss It!
