Typically online degrees are not as respected as degrees from attending a regular college. The reason for this has a lot to do with the requirements (online degrees often have easier requirements to meet) and also the experience that one gets in the classroom (interacting with teachers, students, and other faculty) is often helpful for gaining even more insight into the chosen field of study.

I would say that even though it is not typically as highly respected if it is the only option, or the more feasible option, it is better than not studying at all. Make sure that it is an accredited school though, whether it is online or the traditional route.

I doubt if anything is free but they do a part-time course with a diploma in theology which is as cheap (financially) as you can get. I've done it and the quality of spiritual teaching is excellent. They have video links for this course so you don't have to be physically present in Edinburgh, Scotland. There may also be grants available for degree courses. They are linked for that to Glasgow Universities. All the best!
