Part Time Degree

Brad Said:

Can I work part time while doing an engineering degree?

We Answered:

I graduated with a degree in Chemical Engineering. You can certainly work part time if you have good time-management skills.

Somewhere between 12-24 hours a week sounds realistic. Just depends on your course load that particular week.

Law Degree, Part-Time or Distance Learning, which would you recommend?

We Answered:

My advice is to do the course Part time, Whilst distance learning is equally as hard, it is looked down on by lawyers,

In terms of work content, you will have your seven core subjects over the 4-5 yrs dependent on how long your part time course is, plus your electives.

Your main workload will be the associated reading, of case law, academic text. Law is very personal study driven, so you get what you put in it, but expect to be doing 16-20 hrs personal reading.

having studied a degree and diploma prior to this your well ahead of the game, as you know most of the work is surrounding assignment, and research techniques.

I don't foresee you running into problems in the first year balancing it with work, but as you know law is not the easiest of subjects and takes time and dedication.

I wish you luck, just don't burn yourself out

How GI bill works for part time Master degree?

We Answered:

I'd be careful and check it out thoroughly. My husband got screwed on his GI bill. Was told he could use it after being honourable discharged. Found out after that he had still be in the service to use it. So be careful and check it out. Or just do what my sis is doing now. Taking classes here and there that are going to apply to her Master's. Just double check everything!!

How long does it take to complete a uni degree part time in Canada?

We Answered:

My university (UWO) allowed one to take up to 3 credits in the summer and up to 2 during the school year - so yes, you could take courses all through without breaks. Part-time course selection that matches with your schedule might not always be that great, though, depending on what you're looking at - I would recommend checking out Jobfutures.ca to see what proportion of people did your course of study part-time. The fewer there are, the more difficult it is likely to be.

If you managed to find enough part-time courses you liked, you could probably take 3 years as well, based on the schedule I listed above. Based on the schedules I experienced when I was in school, I was more likely to be able to get 1.5-2 credits during the summer; but I was a Biology student.

Athabasca University provides all distance courses and allows you to work through a course at your own schedule (within certain limits), starting and ending at pretty much any time you want. Even if you don't choose this university, some of their courses may prove to be useful options within your degree program.

Good luck!
