Physical Therapist Degree

Scott Said:

what is a physical therapist degree like?

We Answered:

Nearly all programs in the US now result in a doctorate degree called the DPT. Although there are a handful of programs that still offer the MPT, nearly all of them are in the process of changing to the DPT. Depending on the structure of the program, the DPT is designed to be completed in 6-7 years of college.

The undergraduate and preerquisite phase focuses heavily on the sciences..biology, chemistry, physics, psych, but also math. Entrance into the program will largely depend on how you do in these classes. Although most programs have a minimum GPA requirement of 3.0, most students who get in are around 3.5.

Once in the program it is a more focused and intense course of study. Between classroom, studying, clinicals and homework, expect it to consume 80-90% of your free time. You will be required to take a licensure examination after graduation.

The benefits are a career with a high job satisfaction rate. Pay is comfortable, but certainly not extravagant. Job security is also a benefit.

Julian Said:

Is a physical therapist degree a 2 or 4 year program and what do they make in pay?

We Answered:

In the US, it is neither. All PT programs are now either master's or doctorate level...taking usually between 6-7 years to complete. As of October, 2005, Most PTs (about 45%) were earning between $50,000-70,000 a year with another 22% earning between $70-100,00 a year. Only about 5% of the population working full time earns less than $40,000 a year

There is, however, a physical therapy assistant degree. This is a two year degree, but has much more limited earning potential. About 65% of PTAs earn between $25-40,000 a year. Less than 10% earn more than $50,000.

Can I become a physical therapist with a sports medicine degree?

We Answered:

According to this website:

http://www.ehow.com/how_4842766_become-p…

"Sports medicine physical therapists must have a minimum of a master's degree in physical therapy, but a doctoral degree is becoming preferred. A master's degree in physical therapy for sports medicine takes two years to complete and a doctoral degree takes three years. To find programs accredited by the American Physical Therapy Association, visit their website."

Determine licensing requirements in your state. Most states require sports medicine physical therapists to be licensed. This typically includes completing an application and taking an exam administered by the state. Contact your state licensing department for procedures in your area.

How do I get a Physical therapist degree?

We Answered:

It's typically a 6-7 year program that results in a doctorate degree called a DPT. You spend the first 3-4 years in collage completing your gen eds and prerequisite courses. You then apply to the graduate program (in most cases)...which is highly competitive. You may also need to supply evidence of volunteering or working in a PT clinic and take the GRE. Once admitted to the PT program, it's typically another 3 years.

I'd recommend going to the APTA website at www.apta.org which has a lot of information for potential students.

PT is a graduate program which is three years beyond on a BS. You can certainly get an exercise science undergrad degree but you can get it in anything. You need to do the pre reqs such as one year of gen chem, gen bio, gen physics, A and P, math potentially through calc, stats, and stats.
