Physical Therapy Degree

Maurice Said:

What is the best college for a Physical Therapy degree?

We Answered:

It does not matter where you go for you BS. Go where you can get the best finiancial aid package as you will be in school for at least 7 years. Since you have not started school yet, you will need to earn a DPT not an MPT. Employeers do not care where you went to school, only that you are eligible for licensure and graduated from an accredited college. Go to a college where you feel comfortable. Best wishes. Here are some useful links from the national PT association

Is it possible to pursue medicine after getting my physical therapy degree?

We Answered:

Well, it's a good start, but general chem, bio and physics will not get you admitted in med school. You'll need to return to take more advanced courses such as microbiology, biochem, organic chem etc. as well as take your MCATs.

Daisy Said:

What are easy medical universities in NYC to get into that offer physical therapy degree ?

We Answered:

Generally speaking, PT is not an "easy" program to get into. Typically, programs have a competitive entrance policy...meaning just because you've met the requirements as an undergraduate does not guarantee you will be admitted to the graduate level program. Schools often state a minimum GPA of 3.0 or 2.5, but realistically, students who are admitted have a much higher GPA...typically 3.5 or higher. Furthermore, they have letters of reference, have taken the GRE, may have sat for an interview, etc...whatever the school requires.

However, there are some "direct" admit programs. This means that students are admitted at the freshman level and are allowed to remain in the program through the graduate phase, as long as they maintain the appropriate GPA and course load.

Here is a list of accredited programs in NY...those with the notation "A2" are direct admit programs...the rest are the tradiational competitive entry.

Lewis Said:

What degree do I need in order to go on to a Physical Therapy degree?

We Answered:

In the US, to become a physical therapist, you now need to obtain either a masters of doctorate level degree. Your bachelor's degree should encompass many of the classes that are prerequisite courses for entrance into the professional phase of the program including at least
1. A year and a half of biology
2. Anatomy and physiology
3. Statistics and trigonometry or calculus
4. Basic, lifespan, and abnormal psychology
5. A year of chemistry
6. A year of physics

This may vary from school to school...

You will also want to have all your general education requirements completed by the time you apply for admission to the professional phase.

The structure of programs vaires...some are direct admittance...admitting you as a freshman and garauntee a spot in the professional phase of the program as long as you maintain a certain GPA. Others require you to complete your bachelor's degree and admit you as a grad student to the DPT...some admit you as a senior, you complete your BS degree after the first year and then finish the the master's degree by the end of the third year...it all depends on the school.

One place to get started is to visit the APTA website at www.apta.org and view what schools are accredited PT schools. Then, review which ones you may potentially wish to attend and investigate that program's requiements and structure.

Good luck!

How can I work towards my physical therapy degree before / outside of college?

We Answered:

You can stay at the state public university. It is fine. You need to get good grades at least a 3.5. You need to get your pre reqs completed. You need volunteer hours at a PT clinic. You can work as an aide in PT. You can get cpr certified but you will need that anyway. Try to get into a reasearch lab or gait lab and collect data.

Our local state school which has a PT school offers an exercise science major that has an intership requirement. We talke those students at our clinic, so they have oportunity to experience PT before going to PT school. We are a pediatric clinic. Out latest ES student ran several health fair booths. She re did our hands for parents on exercise and fitness. She ran our walking program at a few schools. She also observed many hours. She also did an inservices. She is ahead of the game when she gets to her peds clinical. She created several home programs for kids that she can put in her portfolio. They were outstanding.

Kyle Said:

Is it possible to get into a physical therapy school if you have a degree in sports medicine?

We Answered:

Anyone with any degree can apply to PT school as long as they have met that school's prerequisite requirements. Albiet, for time sake, if you choose a major that encompasses most of the prerequisite classes, you'll be that much better off. Pre-requistie requirements usually include a year and a half of bio, a year of chem, a year of physics, a year and a half of psych, anatomy and physiology, calc or trig, and stats.

You can visit the UI website to see what that school's particular requirements are. I would also encourage you to explore and apply to other schools as well, as entrance is traditionally very competitive. You can go to the APTA website at: www.apta.org to get a list of accredited PT programs.
