Post Graduate Degree

Elaine Said:

Does a post graduate degree mean a Ph.D qualification and does Astrophysics mean Astronomy?

We Answered:

'Post graduate' is a term mostly used in Europe and the UK to refer to what Americans call 'graduate'. A graduate student is working on a masters or PhD, so post graduate can refer to either. But you really need a PhD to do anything in astronomy or astrophysics. There's not a clear distinction between astronomy, astrophysics, and physics - astronomy tends to include a bit less physics, and astrophysics a bit more physics, and physics a bit less astronomy, but you can get the same job with any of the three degrees.

You need a bachelors degree in astronomy, astrophysics, or physics to apply to a graduate program in one of the three (physics degrees are the most useful because there aren't many jobs in astronomy and physics degrees have other applications as well).

Mathew Said:

what's the difference between post-graduate degree and master's degree in the UK?

We Answered:

I think that would depend on where in the world you are, and what precise qualification you already have and are currently studying for. This is because 'a degree' isn't exactly equivalent all around the world - in the same way as school leavers' qualifications aren't. Each country has its own system.

In the UK, a Master's degree is a post-graduate degree involving research. There are other post-graduate qualifications - for example, a post-graduate diploma (which is usually pretty much the taught element of a Master's degree, e.g. a Master's minus the thesis/dissertation).

I know when I worked in University admissions we had a book listing international equivalents, but sadly off the top of my head I can't remember all of them! Sorry!

Hope this helps - and good luck with your studies.

Dwight Said:

Where can I find list of Universities in US offering post graduate degree on ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE?

We Answered:

I tried the below source ... they have the complete list with sublinks to US State Univs.

Gail Said:

what is a post graduate degree related to ecology, writing, rhetoric, permaculture and peace studies?

We Answered:

... (smile) sounds like a lot more years of education and a lot of "double majors"..... glad you have a lot of interests.... makes life more interesting....
If you have the liberty of studying anywhere in the world you could even travel to universities in other countries..... I just don't know of one single field of study that would directly encompass all of your interests.....

Gail Said:

Can you do a post graduate degree at a different university compared to where you did your undergraduate cours?

We Answered:

In the US, not only can you, but it's also encouraged. (Although, it doesn't mean you can't get them from the same university either.)

When you attend different universities, it shows that you're committed to the best program in that field, not necessarily just settling for whatever program is geographically close. For example, one place might have a great undergrad program in psychology. But, it might not have the graduate speciality that you're interested in, so you'd go elsewhere.

Good luck!!!
