Primary Education Degree

Rachel Said:

Will my British degree in Primary Education be valid for teaching if i choose to emigrate to the USA?

We Answered:

Anyone with a valid Bachelor degree is eligible to teach in the USA. What the issue is the following:

1) Each state of the USA has different requirements and therefore you will have to submit your credentials to the appropriate state agency.

2) Also, you will have to be Certified & Licensed by the state you choose to teach in. Most US universities will provide classes for those with Bachelor degree for Certification & Licensing....this is beyond the Bachelor degree...it can take up to two years beyond the Bachelor degree to get fully certified & licensed in the particular state you choose.

Roberta Said:

I have completed my QTS skills tests and have my Primary education degree.?

We Answered:

I would suggest you talk to whoever you did your degree through to discuss if they can put you in another placement for 8 weeks. Or you can call the TDA's teaching information line on 0845 6000 991. They should be able to help you.

Christopher Said:

What else could I do with a primary education degree?

We Answered:

Perhaps, in addition to a major in primary education, you could add a minor in library science, social work, counseling, or even pediatric nursing. I'm not sure what the requirement might be, but they are all great fields that would be working with children. A minor degree could be your stepping stone to a second degree and a new career path.

What are your other interests outside of school? Sometimes they can be your guide to deciding on a truly rewarding education and career. You have probably heard it before, but when you find a job you really enjoy, it's hardly like work at all.

Kimberly Said:

How easy is it to get a job as a primary teacher, once you have got a primary education degree?

We Answered:

It completely depends on where you live. Some areas have teacher shortages and some areas are overrun with applicants. Just do some research beforehand to see what categories the school districts in your area fall under.

Marion Said:

Does a scottish primary education degree allow you to teach in American elementary schools?

We Answered:

If you have scottish education qualifications, that are grades that are equilivant to the american standards to go to university, then you can study there. You don't need to re-do an american school education.

Jeff Said:

Does two years completion of a Primary Education degree count as anything?

We Answered:

Two parts to this question, really.

Firstly, some colleges/universities give you a certificate each year. Some of these have recognised academic value, while others are not worth much more than a well done certificate from your primary school teacher. Suggest you check with the college as to whether they can award you something. Even if you get nothing of academic value, you need to leave this period in your CV - 2years travelling is not an option.

Secondly, the skills you gained I am sure could be useful if actually required by the job you are applying for. But make sure they are actually required. Then write them up as if applied to that job.

Good Luck!
