I am doing a university degree in business where my major is risk management and insurance and my minor?

We Answered:

It depends on your area, but mostly you should go for a position in Commercial Underwriting. That will get your foot in the door for other oppurtunities and you should make good money. Most major insurance companies have training programs, again depending on your area.

Finance Degree- financial risk management?

We Answered:

I will try to structure your question a little - you will finish undergraduate school with two degrees? One degree in financial risk management? And a 2nd degree in international trade? These are degrees, not majors? And you also want to know about accounting?

Without understanding much about your school or goals, here is what I suggest: the financial risk management course work fits with many agencies and private sector non-profits, e.g. the Ford Foundation in NYC, the International Monetary Fund in Washington, DC, and a host of foundations in Washington and California. Financial risk-management is in great demand because of the troubles on Wall St.

International Trade represents an excellent entre to places like the Import-Export Bank, Washington, and the U.S. House of Representatives. The issue of exporting jobs to Asia will be front and center in the next four years. Britian's PM said this week that he hopes America will not put up protectionist trade barriers, etc.

Returning to your question about an "accounting job," you needed to make that decision early in your undergraduate years. Or you will need to do a Masters in Accounting at a recognized school. However, I don't see you going into accounting with all your finance classwork.

I have answered your questions without knowing anything about you.

Degree in biology, applying for a job with a risk management company?

We Answered:

Good luck with that one. I think your degree will hurt you. I have worked in risk management and the only person without a finance degree they will hire are people with math degrees that concentrated in statistics. If you have a strong statistics background and know how to work Excel to apply that knowledge...I would talk about that, and it might put you in consideration.

Lorraine Said:

what kind of job can you get with a degree in Risk Management/Insurance. good?

We Answered:

It would hae been more helpful if you had written the country where you are trying to find a job since than the response or guidance would have been more meaningful.

If you are based in North America than this is the web-site I would advise you to go to for Risk managment.
For insurance the scope is very wide - basically it would first depend on wether you want to have a career in insurance in marekting, claims or underwriting. Once you decide this you can than narrow down on the insurance department - marine, property & casulaty or auto which you are interested in or whether it is life accident and sickness before you can find one. To explore this you can go to insuranceworks.ca

Thanks
