Before anything else, I'm just wondering what might be prompting you to pursue social work. If you're passionate about working with people and you care about social justice issues, then the profession is for you.

Keep in mind that political science and social work are two distinct disciplines. Political science, as a degree, is theory-based and is not directly linked with any profession outside of academia (eg. you could get a PhD in political science and work as a professor, but other options are fairly limited). Social work is a professional degree and prepares you for generalist practice as a social worker. If you are interested in social work, I would encourage you to focus on getting a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) instead of a general arts degree in political science, as you do generally need a BSW to call yourself a social worker.

Considering the work that social workers do, the profession is low-paying. It's not, however, uncomfortable by any means. If you're in the US, you're looking at a starting salary of $27,000-$33,000 with a BSW, and if you eventually get your MSW, you're looking at a ceiling salary of $65,000. In Canada, the salary is better (a comfortable range of $40,000 to $70,000). Keep in mind that if you do want to make a lot of money, this probably isn't the right career for you. It is the right career, on the other hand, if you want your career to be fulfilling at the end of the day.
