Software Engineering Degree

Josephine Said:

What's the difference between a software engineering degree and a software engineering technology degree?

We Answered:

Oregon Institute of Technology's Software Engineering Technology is very unusual, and deserves more attention from students. Essentially, they've stripped out much of the heavy math and obscure computing theory, and replaced it with more practical programming courses.

Strongly recommended.

Incidentally, graduates of OIT's Software Engineering Technology degree are eligible for NICET Certification as (CET) Certified Engineering Technologists.

OIT's Klamath Falls campus is a bit isolated, but on the AMTRAK Coast Starlight line.

A possible alternate to OIT's degree is San Jose State's degree in Computer Electronics and Network Technology, which is obviously somewhat more hardware oriented.

Leslie Said:

What are good colleges for a software engineering degree?

We Answered:

Relatively few colleges/universities offer pure "Software Engineering". Perhaps the best is Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

Other good schools that offer Software Engineering are:
CalPoly—SLO
Rochester Institute of Technology
Milwaukee School of Engineering

Willie Said:

Should I study anthropology as part of my natural science requirements for a software engineering degree?

We Answered:

Anthropology isn't that helpful for a software engineer, but employers and graduate schools understand that you have to take general education classes so not all of the classes you take as an undergrad are relevant to your major.

Laura Said:

Is a software engineering degree the same as a CS degree?

We Answered:

yes

Marshall Said:

Do you have to have a engineering degree to be a software engineer?

We Answered:

No, you don't have to be an "engineer" to be a software engineer. You would do fine with majoring in the areas you list. What would matter is what you learn, not what your sheepskin says.

George Said:

What is the difference between a computer science and software engineering degree?

We Answered:

software engineering would focus on writing software in a programming language like java C# vb and probably some databases

Computerscience would include topics like networking and hardware as well as software development.

Where you are doing the course would also be important
does the college have good links with industry things like that.
