If you want to teach K-12, you need a state certification for where you want to teach. Here are the requirements based on your desired state of Georgia.

Will learning sign language help with a degree in special education?

We Answered:

I agree with PinkyMoo...her answer is very accurate and detailed.

I am a Teacher of the Deaf working in a mainstream regular education setting with special education teachers. When my students move into the district and come into their classroom, they (the sped teachers) panic because they have never learned or experienced sign language...and it leaves them scrambling to learn basic communication. You wouldn't believe how many sped teachers I have worked with say, "I wish I would have taken a basic course". It's always a bonus to learn it, no matter what area of education you're in.

Katherine Said:

What else can I do with a degree in Special Education, besides teach?

We Answered:

I'm not sure why you would get a degree In Special Education if you don't intend to teach. There is a lot of course work that you don't need, so why pay for it? You might be better off putting your time and money towards what specifically interests you when working with the special needs population.

There are many different fields that pay really well besides teaching such as physical therapist, occupational therapist, speech language pathologist, behavior analyst and recreational therapist. If you don't care for teaching but still wand to work in special needs, these are really great fields.

There are also good online programs around, but you have to shop carefully, and then make sure your DOE will accept the degree from that online univeristy before you enroll.

Best course is to get your bachelor's and work a few years so that you can better prepare for post-graduate school.
