What can you really do with a sports management degree? We Answered:
Your question concerns me because my 18 year old son (a high school senior) wants to major in sports management. What about sports marketing for say Nike, Wilson, etc.- or possibly work at a golf course, or any of the sports stadiums (i.e. Staples Center). Or, writing for a sports publication. What about teaching/coaching middle school or high school. What did you have in mind when you decided on sports management. My son feels it's pretty diverse, but he's is thinking he should probably just major in management with a minor in sports. Are you having difficulty finding jobs, or are they just low paying to start. Interesting in hearing about your experience.Ramon Said:
What I should do in pursing a job with a Sports Management Degree? We Answered:
Couple of routes you can take.1. Look into getting a masters degree. The economy has never been this bad, and if job opportunites are not there, its best to take the time and go back into graduate school. Look into an MBA degree or a Sports Management Masters.
2. Try getting an internship for the Spring.
3. Look for an entry level job within a spots organization, and work your way up.

Is earning a sports management degree the same as earning an MBA degree? We Answered:
Of course it is not the same. The sport management degree focuses on sport management only. The MBA is a general degree preparing students for management positions in any level of a business, up to CEO. MBA students study accounting, finance, marketing, management, statistics, economics, strategy, policy, and other courses. Many MBA programs offer concentrations in these and many other fields, such as sport management, but that amounts to only 2-3 courses in your chosen field in the second year of study. Many students avoid a concentration and take a variety of elective subjects to gain a broader background. The Official MBA Guide provides a lot of information about the MBA degree and MBA schools and programs. It's a comprehensive free public service with more than 2,000 MBA programs listed worldwide. It allows you to search for programs by location (US, Europe, Far East, etc.), by concentration (finance, marketing, aviation management, health management, accounting, etc.), by type of program (full-time, distance learning, part-time, executive, and accelerated), and by listing your own criteria and preferences to get a list of universities that satisfy your needs. Schools report their accreditation status, tuition cost, number of students, class sizes, program length, and a lot of other data. Schools provide data on entrance requirements, program costs, program characteristics, joint degrees, and much more. You can use the Guide to contact schools of your choice, examine their data, visit their web site, and send them pre applications. You can see lists of top 40 schools ranked by starting salaries of graduates, GMAT scores, and other criteria. It's the best service available at http://officialmbaguide.org.
