Diploma In English

Hi,I am 43,no high school diploma, speak english and spanish and have been disparately looking for a job PLEASE?

We Answered:

Hi Shakira,

The very best way to secure gainful employment is to target any company that you would like to work for and visit them or write a 'Speculative Job Application enclosing a copy resume showing your most recent employment first and working back towards your last.

Door knocking, also called 'cold-calling' and putting yourself right in front of the person who does the hiring is also a great way to secure a job.

I suggest that you buy or borrow from your local library a copy of a book titled: "What Color is Your Parachute", this is a Job Search and Career Change Bible, revised and published every November USA. Ideally, you should buy it because you will be constantly dipping into it for information.

Placing advertisements in local shopping mall notice boards is another way to go. Your Spanish would be useful to any organization doing business with with vendors in Spanish speaking countries. Do you type? Good typing skills? Words per minute? Accuracy?

Registering with Job Search Agencies is very much a Lottery as many are into a Numbers-Game, where the more names they have in their register, the more probable it is that will secure placements.

If you want to secure gainful employment, you have to treat it as a 'Full-Time Job', so each day you have to be Pro-active, knocking on doors and asking for an interview. You need to have a Letter of Application and a current resume with you for each company you visit.

Best wishes for success.

Lois Said:

I have a graduate diploma in English not a master degree?

We Answered:

A certificate or diploma is always at a lower level than a degree.

An undergraduate certificate is lower than an undergraduate diploma which is lower than an associates degree which is lower than a bachelors degree.

A graduate certificate or diploma is higher than any of those, but lower than a masters degree.

If you have a bachelors in whatever, and a graduate certificate in English, then that's not as good, just in a general sense, as if you had a masters degree in English.

However, the certificate may be enough to teach English in many settings... especially if you augment that with specific training in "Teaching English as a Second Language" (TESL) or "Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages" (TESOL)...

...and there are GAZILLIONS of programs out there -- including some entirely online -- where you can get a good certificate in that. Just try to get your certificate or diploma in TESL or TESOL from a school that's accredited by an agency approved by the US Department of Education (USDE) and/or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA); and the easiest way to figure that out is to look-up the school in the USDE and/or CHEA databases at:

USDE DATABASE - http://ope.ed.gov/accreditation
CHEA DATABASE - http://www.chea.org/search

If the school's not in either or both of those databases (and if it's not in one, then look it up in the other since there are a small number of schools accredited by USDE-approved agengies but not CHEA-approved agencies, and vice versa), then it's not accredited. Period. Believe NOTHING that the school says on its web site about being accredited. Always look it up. I repeat: If it's not in either or both of those databases, then it is NOT accredited.

Hope that helps.
