Rita Said:

is it possible to gain employment in the community services industry with a criminal record?

We Answered:

Dear Persephone,

You received a Fine at 16.

1. Were you considered a youthful offender or an adult?

2. All you got was a ticket and fine? Nothing else?

3. What was it for? Do you know if it was a felony or misdemeanor?

OK, since I do not know all the facts, we will just go with the information presented ----

1. On applications, (depending on wording) they want the last 10 year convictions OR from 18years old.

2. You will not have a problem with getting a job. at age 16, you are a minor. Don't let this stop you. Apply now

3. If the employer brings it up, answer just like you wrote here. be honest.

If i can be of more help, just ask. ----- Bill -------

5 reasons why school's shouldn't do 75 hours of community sercive just to get their high school diploma?

We Answered:

we had to do 70 hours per year of high school and I struggled to get my hours because I played soccer and volleyball both for my school and for club teams and I had a part-time job. So i was busy every day of most weeks. If your active you don't have time to get that many hours of community service and you shouldn't be punished. I almost didn't graduate because two months before graduation i still needed 25 hours, and although i had a 4.2 gpa and more than enough academic credits if i hadn't gotten the 25 hours i wouldn't have received my diploma

Community service is a diploma requirement?

We Answered:

Wow! What a great idea! I do tons of volunteer work and wish I'd known about it earlier in life.

You can volunteer at many places.

If you like to work with your hands, try Habitat for Humanity. They build houses for people who would not ordinarily be able to afford to own their own home.

Hospitals need volunteers.

Senior Centers.

After school programs for kids.

Animal Shelters.

Public library.

These are just a few.

Call your local chamber of commerce. They can usually provide a list of non-profit organizations in your area that always welcome help.

Good luck and enjoy your work. It's very rewarding and will hopefully be something you'll continue in adulthood.

Veronica Said:

my school wont give me my high school diploma unless i complete community service hours, can they do that?

We Answered:

Highschool boards should not be able to withhold diplomas from graduates as studying highschool work and passing is a major accomplishment for children that don't have the liberties of going home and having an absolutely quiet study space, or people to help them solve answers or find ways to find people that can help them better solve their homework answers. It is simply a convenient makeshift law that was created to make use of higschool students' labour, and is too much to ask of these youth.
The diploma should be given regardless.
30 community service hours is like spending a full work week as an adult only without pay.
The thirty hours are for students to get an idea and experience, but realistically, employers don't care about volunteer work, as they will only hire people with experience. And also, even if the students do placements, they are not remotely likely to get placements in job locations where they may actually want to work.
If there is no way around this for now, the school should dedicate the last week of school for the children to go out and do their placement whereas it will be more understandable to the youth, and feel like a field trip.
For you, you can always try to volunteer at a church homeless meal, which is always fun, or at a foodbank. Other than that it will be much harder to find a placement without someone to help you get it, ie calling to arrange for you.
