You shouldn't have any problems getting into colleges and you are also eligible for the bright futures program.

Practically speaking, a GED is just as good as a high school diploma for this sort of position, and even the lack of both wouldn't necessarily be a bar. If it were a highly technical position like in IT, that might be another story.

If you took a GED test, then you will most likely be getting a GED diploma. Not a high school diploma.

Call your local Army recruiter and ask them about the GED Plus Program. We reopened the program last week and the way the program works is that you can enlist without either a diploma or GED. After you enlist, you go to Fort Jackson, SC to take a few weeks of GED prep classes to get your GED. Once you finish there and get your GED you go to basic training.

In order to use the GED Plus Program, you have to be at least 18, you cannot have more than one misdeameanor conviction, and you have to be out of high school for more than six months unless you came from a school district where you exceed their maximum age to attend high school. All other qualifications apply, to include no felony convictions, no drug convictions, must meet medical standards, and you can't be a single parent. Also, you have to get at least a 50 on the ASVAB. You would probably have to return to your home country to apply to a US university, obtain a student visa, and return to the US for university study. It would be unusual for your student visa to allow you to work. In the meantime, I do not see how you cold get a work permit from the US Immigration Service unless you are married to a US citizen or permanent resident. If you are so married, you might be able to enroll in college without a student visa.
