If you intend to go to a community college, a GED is very helpful. Without a high school diploma or a GED, most community or junior colleges will not let you in. Some trade schools require one or the other. Once you complete an associate degree at the junior college (or community college) level, if you do well enough, most universities will have no problem accepting you during the application process.

As far as I know, the Diploma is from an accredited high school, and can get you into any college. The GED is taken outside of the high school situation and in some instances cannot be used to get into college. Both are a certificate of proof of a particular level of learning.
