For starters, you can go to college with either a GED or a high school diploma. Also, there are a few things to watch out for when looking at an online diploma program.

For starters, most any place that will offer a high school diploma to someone over 21 is lying, illegitimate or at the least very shady. Law states that a school is only required to teach to you until you are 21 years old, at which point adult education and ged services take over.

Second of all, high school diplomas via internet are not accepted by all colleges and universities. It's at the discretion of the school. And I tell you what, most online school programs have accreditation issues.

The third issue is with funding. The scam aspect of some of these schools exists with the payments. At first, everything is going great, classes are easy, and classes are cheap, you at the top of the world. However, in this particular scam the price goes up dramatically once you get into your "senior" year, or the equivalent for that school's program. And since in these schools credits are non-transferrable, you only have the option of paying and finishing, or not paying, losing what you've done so far, and the money you've paid already.

I know some of the high school programs work the same way. My wife did it too and got caught up in it.

You can't get a free diploma online (those are businesses) and you can't get a GED online at all, those are only offered in person at registered testing centers. Probably the GED is your best bet at this point, but be careful not to get ripped off - better to avoid any online programs at all.
