Postgraduate Diploma In Law

Ricky Said:

Legal proof reading, (UK legal degree, postgrad diplo, legal pract)?

We Answered:

Editing for a legal-services database such as Lexis-Nexis.

The pay is not a draw at first, worse than fast-food actually, but editors who prove their worth (and keep things easy for the clerks who send them work) generally move on to plum assignments in a year or so.

These services occasionally advertise in legal journals, but your friend could try sending in a c.v. and cover letter (call to get the right contact person) in case they've got back-up at some point.

Morris Said:

Is it acceptable for me to do a postgraduate degree in law and then decide I might have made a mistake...?

We Answered:

I've just finished my LPC - i still dont have a TC but i would say about 50% of my peers are in the same situation.

Throughout my undergrad degree all of the careers info we received emphasised the importance of securing training contracts early and highlighted the intense competitive nature of applications. This is not the case for the majority of law firms.

If you are only targeting magic circle firms then your idea of a career in law may be a bit narrow minded. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of smaller civil firms practising in a diverse range of areas who wont even advertise their TCs on lawcareers.net. Often these firms will only advertise for trainees a couple of months before they need them to start. Others will only take on trainees who have worked as paralegals with them for a year.

If you are only interested in a major international commercial based firm you may be leaving things late - but medium sized high street firms of all varieties, smaller trendy city firms or even smaller local firms may only target an LPC grad who actually knows what they want to do. I never quite understood why the big firms target students early - before they have really decided what they want to do!

The money issue is more of a worry but perhaps not that big a deal. I paid for my LPC with a graduate loan which is a bit of a weight on the proverbial shoulders but they have "graduate" loan schemes for just this reason. I would say that it is worth the risk - but this does of course depend on your commitment to actually becoming a solicitor.

If your hesitation is based on something more than financial concerns i would rethink everything - a degree in law will hold as much weight as any other degree if you are looking towards non-law grad schemes.

Good luck

Marsha Said:

2 year postgraduate LLB versus 1 year potgraduate diploma in law: Is spending an extra year worthwhile?

We Answered:

The 2 year LLB is a much better option. You will have a Bachelor of Law rather than just a Diploma so the professional kudos is well worth it. Also you will gain a much greater depth of knowledge - even have the chance to choose areas of special interest to study, do extensions of introductory level courses etc. It will make you a better lawyer.
It will cost a little more and put off beginning your working life for another year but the long term benefits to you far outweigh those factors.
