Social Work Degree

Felix Said:

What types of jobs can you get with a social work degree?

We Answered:

There are lots of different directions you can go, hospitals, school districts, insurance companies and non profits like the YMCA or Red Cross. However, I would echo the other person who said that many people in the field have masters degrees. Try and get a job with a company that would pay for your tuition to pursue an advanced degree!

Chad Said:

Can someone with a social work degree become a psychiatrist?

We Answered:

Yes, but you probably would have to supplement some psychology courses to fill in the requirements. The main things about psychiatry is that you must Become a medical doctor then get graduate work in psychiatry/psychology.

Tom Said:

Apart from social work, what are the career prospects of a BA/BSc Hons Social Work degree?

We Answered:

Depending on if you have a Bachelor's or Master's degree. My suggestion would be to look in to counseling fields. Most social work degrees have an emphasis in counseling and mediation. You may be able to work for local social service fields, child protective agencies or foster care organizations.
Best of luck to you.

Sam Said:

How much can a Social Work degree help me in getting a Non-profit/NGO job?

We Answered:

Degrees and certifications will always help but, at the end, if you can't "sell" yourself and, thus, give the company a reason to hire you over your competitors, none of your degrees, certificates and any other fancy papers will help you. The main thing, however, is to ask yourself what would you really want to do and go after that instead. Otherwise, you will never truly be happy and productive.

Tim Said:

What is the difference between a Sociology and a Social Work degree?

We Answered:

Sociology and Social Work are not the same academic fields. While they are both within the social studies (as is history, political science, psych, human resources, etc...), they concentrate on very different things.

Sociology is the academic study of how people interact in groups and why. Social Work is a professional field of study concerned with the practical application of techniques to alleviate the problems of individuals in society (poverty, crime, etc...)

You can enter the field at an entry level with an undergraduate degree in any of the social sciences but a professional position will require a graduate professional degree such as Master of Social Work (MSW), Master of Education (MEd) in Counseling, Master of Arts (MA) in Counseling, or a Master of Arts in Psychology (with a specialization in counseling). You might also consider, if it's your sort of thing, one of the religious master's degrees that prepare pastoral counselors.

The best of these for what you describe is the MSW.There is such a thing as a BSW at some schools that can get you into the entry level of the field.

Your original question: The real difference between a sociologist and a social worker is that the sociologist asks "why are these people poor" while the social worker asks "what can I do about this poverty right now"

Happy learning!

Susan Said:

What is the differents in a sociology degree and social work degree?

We Answered:

You would be much better off going to a university with a BA in social work if you want to be a social worker. The BSW is the most respected BA degree in the human services because it is accredited and has a good internship. A degree in sociology will give you a good understanding of social problems. A degree in human services at a BA level is uncommon (usually seen more at an AA level). You might really want to look at another university. DA
