Access To Higher Education

Cheryl Said:

Any colleges in the UK with an access to higher education course and dormitories?

We Answered:

If you mean colleges aimed at 16-18 year olds, then you're not going to find one with accommodation. We don't have that sort of system.

Post 18 is university, and these are the places that have halls of residences (not dormitories- we don't have dorms anywhere but boarding school)

You won't be entitled to any financial help, so accommodation would be hard to afford unless you're wealthy already. I would suggest staying where you are for now, then coming to the UK for uni if you still want to be here.

Carolyn Said:

What subjects would I need to choose in a access to higher education course to get into dietetics?

We Answered:

hi,
this should be fine. but there is also an access to health sciences course-maybe you could have a look at this and see if you think it would be appropriate. Most colleges offer a completely different selection / type of access course so its worth looking around, even if it means you have to travel a little further. x

Harvey Said:

Access to higher education course, do you gain your english, maths and science equivalent on this course?

We Answered:

The Access to HE course that I did provided opportunities to get English, Maths and Science at Level Two (GCSE) with the chance of getting English, Maths and/or Science at Level Three (A-Level) if you did well enough.

The only way to know however, is to contact whoever is providing the Access to HE course. Even a lecturer will be able to tell you.

Jennie Said:

Why is access to higher education so difficult?

We Answered:

After 7+ years of college, and just as much real-world work experience, I have come to the conclusion that our educational system does not adequately train/educate students. Therefore, I would hate to have a system in which people are forced to attend even more useless education. Fix the system first, then discuss mandating education.

Access to higher education: Why is there a ocean between humanities and science?

We Answered:

Hi,
very interesting and intriguing question. I hold an MA in English and Bsc in Zoology, but I m hardly an ambassador of higher education. UK HE system is not perfect to say the least. Tutors are mostly research oriented but they are asked to take endless lectures, set papers, mark exams and do all possible admin tasks leaving them with a frustrated mind and less and less time for their research passions. As a students I have seen the irritation boiled down to us.
Now about your Access course, if I am not wrong its meant to prepare students for degree level coursework. I think both humanities and science help prepare the students in a different way. Humanities equip you with a communication and wider interpretive skills while science gives analytic and logical skills. A medicine student would require both an ability to interpret, study , communicate(humanities) and also logically analyse a patient's situation.
But I am not surprised by the duel between humanities and science department. I have seen a Shakespearean Study tutor flashing swords to a Modernism guy. Academic rivalry is here to study, considering how bureaucratic and silly our academic structure is.

Tina Said:

How quickly can an "access to Higher Education" course take?

We Answered:

You really need to ask the specific program you are looking at - since it most likely varies. My guess, if i had to make one, would be that it varies depending on the educational level of the student, and also when the classes are offered and how many you take at one time.
