Is Kaplan University worth to attend pursuing BA in Psychology if it accredited regionally but not in my state?

We Answered:

Regional accreditation is the type of accreditation you want any university you look at to have. It means that its degrees are considered genuine by other schools, and that the credits you take there are eligible to transfer. It doesn't mean that they *will* transfer, but they are at least eligible to transfer.

The reason why Kaplan is accredited by North Central is because Kaplan's business office is based in Iowa, and Iowa is in the region that North Central covers. But that does NOT mean that the school isn't acceptable in NY State, or any other state. It's regionally accredited, just like University of Colorado, and you can use a UC degree in NY. Likewise, you could go to Hunter College, which is accredited by Middle States, and use that degree in California. It's not about what region the accreditation body covers - it's about whether or not the school is regionally accredited at all. And yours is.

HOWEVER, the reason why some employers don't like Kaplan degrees, and some unis won't accept their transfer credits, is two-fold: 1) Kaplan isn't considered an academically rigorous uni. In other words, it's a real uni, because it's regionally accredited, but it's not considered to be very good. 2) It's a for-profit company. Most traditional unis are not-for-profits, and there is a real bias out there (not necessarily without foundation) against for-profit schools like Kaplan, U of P, Strayer, etc.

So, is it worth it to complete your degree at Kaplan, or try to transfer to someplace with a better rep, like Hunter, Fordham, Pace, City, Lehman, Wagner, Marymount Manhattan, Columbia School of General Studies, or the other reputable unis in your area? Difficult decision, because you are so close to graduation. But what I'd suggest is this:

Pace offers an accelerated bachelors degree completion program, both online and on campus. Talk to them. IMO, they're your best chance of being able to have as many of your Kaplan courses transfer as possible. They do not offer your major, though:

But at least there, you wouldn't have to start over. I think they'll work with you to try to get as many of your credits to transfer as they can.

The other option is Fordham. They have a similar program for adults. And they DO offer your major!

You can also check Mercy College. They have a similar program.

My suggestion is for you to at least talk to these other schools. See what they think about the transferability of your Kaplan coursework. Then make your decisions.
