Would you sue a school if they showed your child Brokeback Mountain ?

We Answered:

Oh please..."What happens in Ms. Buford's class stays in Ms. Buford's class,"...right. Lets stop beating around the bush here. That statement alone says a couple of things. First she knew it was wrong and second she thought she could trust her students. I don't think the ratings are nearly as important as the motive of this teacher is. This movie equates to soft porn and this is a known method of many teachers to go on what I call hunting expeditions or fishing in their class. They introduce the kids to some soft porn and watch for the ones they think are actually getting turned on, then they go after them. We all know that child predators choose professions that center around children. The problem isn't just male sex predators either. Female predator/teachers are rapidly becoming a huge problem and as I understand the teacher was a female. The movie Brokeback Mountain while it is tastefully done still has some pretty sexually explicit scenes.
What happened here probably amounts to nothing more than a child sex predator in action. Do a little research as I have on "teachers gone wild" and you will see for yourself. I must warn you this web page is pretty graphic.

And no I don't think the school should be sued. It wasn't their fault but I do think schools need to wake-up.

Oakland/California Vs Chicago/Illinois Board of Education?

We Answered:

Hmmm, there should be no problems as your transcripts and work record will follow. Both systems have had Dr. Ruth Love as their superintendent although I don't think her name will mean much in either system as she left both with a tarnished record.

By the way, Check your correspondence for use of apostrophes ...teachers'...plural, since you will be serving more than one teacher and for correct tense usage...appreciated. Good luck.

An appropriate movie for elementary school, Brokeback Mountain?

We Answered:

As a teacher of eighth graders and a parent of a two year, let be the first (and hopefully not the last) to say HECK NO! Any time a teacher of minors plans to show something that is controversial or may be seen as inappropriate he/she needs to sit down and write a letter to the parents stating: why the film is being shown; the rating of the film and why it may be considered inappropriate for those parents who don't know; and alternative activities for students whose parents do not want them to view the movie. You also need to explain to your principal why and when you will be showing this. Then if you are allowed to show it (which I doubt very many schools would allow you to show it), you need to make your you have the permission slips back from the students because--trust me--when it gets out in the community that you showed that movie, parents and other concerned citizens will be calling the school board and demanding you head so you want to make sure you have documentation. CYA! If the movie was not shown for a purpose--one of those just because we have some free time or you aced the test movies--I would not show it at all. I'm not a homophobic, but homosexuality goes against my personal beliefs so as a parent I would contact the school board and ask that you be fired if you showed that movie to my child without asking my permission. And NO! It is not the responsibility of the parent to know what you are doing in the classroom when it comes to something like showing movies. It's your responsibility to let them know about this. I could go on about this forever, but the bottom line is that it is wrong to introduce and teach--ESPECIALLY AT THAT YOUNG OF AN AGE--someone else's child about such a moral and controversial issue without first getting their permission.

Is Brokeback Mountain appropriate for Classrooms?

We Answered:

This was completely unacceptable in every single way! What is next, the teacher shutting the door and molesting a few students and then saying..."what happens here stays in here"? This is rediculous!!!!! These are 12 years olds who shouldn't even be seeing rated R movies, let alone being subjected to homosexuality..... These are impressionable children at a time of sexual unsureness..... I am not anti homosexual, just I don't feel that kids should have it shoved down there throats at such a vulnerable age..... That teacher is a sicko!!!!!

Discuss It!
