Connie Said:

If I live in New York how can I go to school in Toronto?

We Answered:

You need to apply for and receive a student visa before you can attend classes at a Canadian institution. You must also be aware that tuition for non-Canadian students can be anywhere from 40%-80% more then for Canadian students. Make sure that when you look for an institution you check out their costs for international students before you decide what you want to do.

Once you get the student visa (which you will need regardless of family since you will not be allowed to attend classes without it) you can either live in residences if your school has them or you can live with relatives. It's your call.

As to whether or not any of your credits will transfer, that is up to the college or university you choose to attend here in Canada. They will ask for a transcript from your last school and will most likely ask for a syllabus from your classes before they determine if your credits will transfer.

Hector Said:

I'm currently studying A-Level(AS) in London.I'd like to move to Canada next year to study A2.is it possible?

We Answered:

The short answer is no you can't. And it is a very bad idea to switch for a single year in any case as it takes a year to adjust so you will lose a year.

Best to stay in the UK for the final year, sit your A2s and apply to Canadian universities during your A2 year. You can also apply for British unis at the same time.

Higher education in Canada? What are the requirements, etc.?

We Answered:

At seventeen, you would likely be in the last year of high school in Toronto. Afterwards most students go either to community college or university. (Unlike the US, when Canadians say "college", they always mean a community college.)

If you want to study psychology or management then it sounds like you would prefer university. Costs depend on the school, and whether or not you are a permanent resident (PR). If you are migrating, then you would likely be a PR, so tuition would be around two or three thousand (Canadian dollars) a semester. As an international student tuition would be about ten thousand a semester. Room and board costs extra (if you pay the university for residence, it can cost a lot more). In both cases you will be eligible for a scholarship, but they are not common, and it might be hard to get one without a record of scholarship in Canada. For fall admission to a Canadian university you would normally apply around January.

Colleges are a lot cheaper, but emphasize trades such as carpentry, etc. However, many colleges also offer one-year university prep courses that might help with your transition.

If you did move, the University of Toronto is one of the best universities in Canada, so it would be close to home. A good college in the Toronto area is Sheridan College (and there are lots more). For more information, check out Maclean's magazine. They publish a guide to Canadian universities every year, and it is available on the web (I think you have to pay a small fee).

Angela Said:

toronto or montreal?

We Answered:

In Montreal you can get by w/o speaking French... but I'm sure that they would appreciate it if you learned some.

Montreal is older and has a more European feel to it. Toronto is more like Chicago or NY. I think Montreal is alos a lot dirtier than Toronto. There are tons of arts, cultural, sports, social things to do in both cities...but my vote is Toronto.

Dorothy Said:

Moving to Toronto next summer, want to go to uni how do I start with no money?

We Answered:

You can apply to universities or community colleges in Toronto as an international student. If you are accepted, you can then apply for a student visa. As an international student, you would need to pay tuition fees of about $18,000 a year at a university ($11,000 and up at a community college). You would not be permitted to work off campus for the first year (although you could work on campus for some limited number of hours), but after a year you can apply for permission to work off campus part time and in the summer. You would not be eligible for any kind of Canadian-government student loan, of course, but you might be able to get some kind of loan through US sources.

More complicated than you thought?

Have you considered studying at a university in California, then spending your third year as an exchange student in Toronto? Exchange students generally just pay the usual tuition fees to their home institution.

Brandy Said:

what are the steps to take to continue my studies in TORONTO?

We Answered:

No-one can answer how much credit you will receive except the university itself.

Contact the university or visit the university's website, they will ask for your school transcripts or they will ask you to get it evaluated by a third party and the credit you will receive will be based on that evaluation.

We cannot answer your question, only the universities which you want to attend will be able to do this.
