You're getting the Coverdell confused with the 529 college savings plan. You can transfer the 529 plan to another child in the same family.

One of the neat things about the Coverdell account is that it can be used for almost any sort of education or training, not specifically for college. Whereas the 529 plan is setup for college.

A 529 plan will alter the Expected Parental Contribution of the Financial Aid formula.

A Coverdell Education Plan will alter the Expected Student Contribution of the Financial Aid Formula.

So both may potentially reduce overall aid eligibility, but it really depends on how low you are to start and the value accumulated in these plans

If you want it for your daughter, I would do an UTMA account. This way its protected. What I mean is this, you are the signer but your daughter owns it. But..she can't touch it till you both go in the bank and close it out. She can't withdraw money from it till its closed and reopened in her name as owner and signer.

My parents just saved money in a savings account, I think. It worked pretty well!
