Sherri Said:

How can I get student loans if my school isn't recognized by the department of education?

We Answered:

I wouldn't say the US Dept of Ed thinks they are all vacations. I just think the government and the general US population frown upon hard earned tax dollars being spend outside the US.

Unfortunately, study abroad programs are for those who can afford them on their own (or who have family members who can fit the bill). If I were you, I'd get a job or two and save, save, save... THAT is the good old fashioned way to do this. I promise the school will still be there in two years or however long it takes you to save up enough for living expenses. In the mean time, move in with mom or dad or another relative so you can save every penny of what you earn. If they can't help you by giving you cash, maybe they can do that to help.

Louise Said:

Should i pay the interest on my student loans starting now?

We Answered:

I have the same type of loan, I deferred the loan for a year or so, you can do the same thing by calling and tell them that you're not financially ready to start making payments. If you're ready yes, you should start making payments ASAP before that amount keep increasing more and more.

Jose Said:

Can Social Security Disability payments be offset to pay for defaulted student loans?

We Answered:

no -- right or wrong looks like you are going to stick it to us taxpayers once again!!!

Jenny Said:

Our refund was garnished by the Department of Education, due to a student loan my husband owes. What do I do?

We Answered:

You can file an 8379 to try and get your portion of the refund back. You have to mail in the form.

This is going to be a continuing issue until the student loan is paid off. You should work with the lender to get the loans paid back, otherwise this will happen every year.

Marion Said:

I have never defaulted on my student loan and it was sold to the department of education.?

We Answered:

Many banks had planned to get out of the federal student loan industry because they were losing money. The federal government gave the U.S. Department of Education the authority to buy loans from the banks so that students could continue to receive federal student loans.

Nathaniel Said:
