Because of the genocide of intellectuals and abolition of the education system in Cambodia during the rule of the Khmer Rouge in the 1970s, Cambodia continues to be at a substandard level of education. The education system had to be completely reformed in the early 1980s. Today, the nation is struggling to get teachers who are truly qualified to teach in its schools and there is a great lack of students who are going to schools. Improvements are being made, but it is very slow. Recently many private schools and universities have opened, which some say are better than the other universities.

The government does not currently have a standard of accredation, so it cannot be determined whether these new universities are better than the others.

There are a lot of scholarships provided for Cambodian candidates to further study abroad, such as in USA, New Zealand, Japan, China, Vietnam, France, Thailand and so on.

You can go to see the bullentin board in front of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport. New scholarshiops are announced every month.
