Have you tried going for the classics? When I was a kid I LOVED Math Blaster and Oregon Trail. I realize those might not hold a lot of appeal for a 6-year-old in this day and age, though.

The Secret Island of Dr. Quandary is a classic that you could download on a laptop to take with you anywhere. Good for middle-school level.

The easy freeware site has several games - sports, RPG, racing, puzzles & logic, strategy, etc. You would have to look though it. Some are more "educational" than others. One is called "Eurohist" and is described as **Take a trip back through the mists of time to faraway lands and strange places! Play the challenging and educational "EuroHist! " history game. Point and click, arcade style, graphics-intensive game.**

I think it was like Amazon Adventure or Amazon Trail something. I think it was made by the people who made Oregon Trail. I played it back in the day as well.
