Does New York City Department of Education contribute to 403b Tax Deferred Annuity? We Answered:
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the city doesn't match any portion of your TDA contributions. The only $$ the DOE contributes into your TRS account are:
ASAF:
-this is your "secondary" pension account, and the MCAF is your "primary" account. The MCAF is where your 3% (or 4.85 % for new Tier V members and those that opted in for the 55/25) deduction from every paycheck goes. If you're Tier III or IV, this 3% is deducted for the first ten years of service, then stops. If you're in Tier V or opted into 55/25, you're paying 4.85% rather than 3%, and paying in longer than 10 years. Either way, these are your pre-tax $$ deducted from your check.
Once you reach "top" salary, the DOE contributes $450 (or $550, I forget) a year into your ASAF
(top salary meaning you're at step 8B or beyond). This is the only DOE $$ you see, other than when you retire..
Your TDA contributions (the 8% you put in), again are your pre-tax $$, but are not matched by DOE.

Do I need to be registered at NYC Department of Education if I want to teach ESL at private schools in NYC?We Answered:
for a private school you may not need to be licensed with the city...although it wouldn't hurt...you will need a state license or equivalent thereof that says you are certified to teach ESL...private schools do not always follow the same rules as the board of education, but do adhere to the state requirements...you need to look at the schools individually and ask about their hiring procedures...Vicki Said:
What is the procedure for the New York City Department of Education when an occurrence report is completed? We Answered:
They are usually suspended or they are moved out of the classroom to a non-teaching situation within the system until the situation is cleared up (but this is rare). This is a case by case decision and as such I cannot give you a clear answer to your question. I would suggest you direct your answers to the UFT and/or the NYC School Department with more information regarding the case you are discussing. If this is a case in which action is already being taken for legal reason they may be limited in their ability to respond.Good Luck!!!
I am not a member of the UFT - but I am a member of the parent union the AFT and I am familar with some of there procedures.

New York City Department of Education: Can you go to any school in your borough? We Answered:
You're allowed to, but High Schools outside of your zone dont have to accept you, wheras high schools within your zone do. Many times to go to a better school you have to take an entrance exam because they have to provide an education to the kids in their zone, AND support you as well, which puts a strain on the system.Myrtle Said:
Does the New York City Department Of Education fail you for being late 20 times in a semester? We Answered:
I always thought it was based on the teachers' rules. I've probably been late more than 20 times and I haven't gotten any warnings about failing the grade. The Chancellor says that you must maintain at least 90% attendance to pass. Out of about 180 days, this means you can't be absent more than 18 days per year. However, a few years ago, I have crossed that limit twice, with 21 absences and 28 absences. I don't know if the policy has changed or not, but I made it to the honors class in the next grade.
I think the 2 tardies = 1 absence is also a teachers' policy, because several of my teachers use that formula. However, I don't think it counts as far as the 90% attendance goes.
I think you'll be fine. If none of your teachers have warned you, then you should be in no danger of failing the grade.

Detention in New york city Department of education highschool? We Answered:
I surely hope you are kidding and just asking a stupid question to get some yahoo points. You should be glad you didn't get a referral, or a written record in your file. What happened to taking responsibility? That teacher is actually on her own time too and is actually staying on it to prove a point to students who act like jerks who want to waste other students' valuable learning time, then cry about the personal time. In my school you'd get another detention from administration for not showing up, then an out of school suspension for not showing up for the admin detention. It is sorry to think that you are part of the new wave of responsibility that supported President Obama in mass (who wants you to cut off the computer, tv, and take responsibility for school by the way) and are just a couple years away from voting. If you were doing what you were supposed to be doing at the time (not talking and listening to the teacher or following her directions) you wouldn't find yourself in this spot or tempted to make excuses that it was unfair to you, because countless other students happened to be talking too. Grow up and do your time. You should be apologizing to the teacher instead of running away from any kind of personal accountability. They work hard and have to deal with students who have no appreciation. Do you not have any appreciation that this teacher as well as all your others are trying to educate you to prepare you for the real world, a world where they could be making twice as much if it wasn't for a love for teaching and a civic responsibility that means they will be in one of the most underpaid and unappreciated professions on Earth, obviously as partially evidenced by your quest for approval of your warped sense of right and wrong. I advise you to look up the meaning of RESPECT. You might be in a position some day as an employer, a boss, a parent or even a teacher, where you might hope to get it yourself.
